About the Role
This is a powerful opportunity to lead genuine community change through connection, cultural voice, and inclusive engagement. The Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer will raise awareness of Carers SA and strengthen connections with Aboriginal communities across South Australia.
You’ll lead the delivery of culturally relevant information sessions, build relationships with key community stakeholders, attend cultural events, and coordinate the Aboriginal Carer Panel, helping shape better outcomes for Aboriginal Carers and their families.
Carers SA is seeking an individual who brings cultural knowledge, community connections, and a strong commitment to walking alongside Aboriginal Carers. We’re looking for someone to step into the new role of Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer to:
Deliver culturally safe community engagement sessions and outreach to increase Aboriginal Carer referrals
Strengthen partnerships with Aboriginal service providers, peak bodies, and grassroots groups
Support and coordinate the Aboriginal Carer Panel, ensuring voices are heard in service design
Contribute to ongoing improvement in Carers SA’s approach to inclusive, responsive care
Represent Carers SA at cultural events, field days and community forums
Collaborate with internal teams to create accessible, culturally appropriate communication tools
Build respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities and organisations
Share knowledge about Carers SA supports and services
Help more Aboriginal people who care for family or community to recognise themselves as Carers and feel confident connecting with Carers SA
Attend events, yarn with community groups, and raise awareness
Support and grow the First Nations Carer Panel, helping to amplify the voice of Aboriginal Carers
About You
This is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified position. You’ll bring strong cultural knowledge, a passion for advocacy, and a commitment to inclusive practice. You are a confident communicator who can build trust and connection across diverse communities.
You will also have:
Proven experience engaging with Aboriginal communities and delivering outreach activities
Stakeholder and community connections within the Aboriginal community
Excellent public speaking, relationship building and communication skills
A genuine commitment to supporting Aboriginal Carers
An understanding of the barriers Aboriginal Carers face and how to overcome them
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
A current driver’s license, DHS Working with Children Check, and National Police Check
Desirable:
Experience working with Carers
Lived experience as a Carer
Relevant qualifications in Social or Community Services
