Essential Requirements
To be eligible to work with us you must:
Be an Australian Citizen
Hold a minimum NV1 (Negative Vetting Level 1) security clearance
Be available to work in-person at a Defence site (Canberra preferred)
Have separated from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) or Australian Public Service (APS) for at least 12 months
Have demonstrated experience in Defence project / capability risk management (above-the-line)
Please note: Candidates who do not meet these criteria will not be considered.
Qualifications and Experience
Demonstrated experience managing project / capability risks in a Defence acquisition or sustainment environment.
Hands-on experience using Defence risk management systems (e.g. Predict!, CapabilityOne).
Sound understanding of Defence risk policies and processes (e.g. CASG Risk Management Manual, Navy Harmonised Risk Management Matrix).
Relevant qualifications in risk management (eg Certified Practicing Risk Manager) or project management (e.g. PRINCE2, PMP).
Excellent communication, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
Please note the standard of competence for these roles is high. If you do not have prior risk experience in Defence or complex project environments, you will not be considered.
Common Responsibilities (these vary by seniority)
Develop and implement Project Risk Management Plans aligned with CASG or Domain-specific policies.
Identify, analyse, and manage risks, issues, and opportunities across project phases, using Defence risk management processes.
Develop and maintain risk registers in tools such as Predict! and CapabilityOne.
Develop and track risk treatment plans and monitor their implementation progress.
Facilitate risk workshops and support stakeholder engagement in risk identification.
Provide regular risk reports and presentations to capability governance bodies (e.g. Integrated Project Team or Program Steering Group forums).
Provide risk advice to inform project decision-making and planning.
Apply qualitative and quantitative risk evaluation methods.
Support contingency allocation, usage tracking, and risk-based budget justifications.
Monitor and escalate emerging risks, trends, and changes in risk exposure.
Ensure alignment between project, program, and enterprise-level risks.
Prepare risk inputs for acquisition documentation (e.g. Business Cases, SmartBuyer reports, Cabinet Submissions).
Maintain audit-ready records and support internal or external assurance reviews.
Contribute to lessons learned processes, including post-risk treatment evaluations.
Embed a proactive risk culture across multi-disciplinary project teams.
Work with engineering, commercial, schedule and test leads to achieve risk integration.
Apply risk classification frameworks and scoring systems which are consistent with Defence policy.
Provide coaching and mentoring on risk frameworks, tools and techniques.
Operate independently in fast-paced environments.
