Senior Product Owner

  • Clerk Grade: 09/10
  • Full-time, Temporary for 12 months
  • Hybrid- 5 days fortnight in Pyrmont office

About the team

The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is an agency within the NSW Department of Customer Service. The Registry was formed in 1856 to register life events in NSW accurately and securely for all time. This includes the registration of births, deaths and marriages and official changes of name and sex.

This role sits within Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) the Digital and Identity Security Division in the IT & Program Delivery team.

About the role

As the Senior Product Owner you will be accountable for effective end to end management of digital products, including taking products from strategy, through to initial idea, implementation, support and continuous improvement to meet organisational and NSW Government objectives.

Your day-to-day

  • Owns and manages the Product Backlog.
  • Prioritizes and refines backlog items based on value, risk, and dependencies.
  • Works closely with the business analysts, designers, development team, and business stakeholders.
  • Facilitate Scrum ceremonies: sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Helps define user stories, acceptance criteria, and success metrics.

Key accountabilities

  • Define and communicate the product vision and roadmap.
  • Create and maintain a well-prioritized product backlog.
  • Write user stories with clear acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure maximum value delivery within constraints (time, budget, resources).
  • Make trade-off decisions between scope, time, and cost.
  • Engage with stakeholders regularly to gather input and share progress.
  • Monitor product performance and iterate based on feedback.

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Clear and persuasive communication of ideas, goals, and product vision.
  • Strong facilitation skills across cross-functional teams and leadership levels.
  • Experience in balancing competing priorities under tight timelines.
  • Comfort with metrics, KPIs, and analytics tools to assess product performance.
  • Ability to identify and resolve product and process inefficiencies.
  • Deep understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum, SAFe, etc.).
  • Experience managing complex backlogs, roadmaps, and multi-team environments.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and capable of pivoting quickly.
