The opportunity
This Solicitor Level 3 role is responsible for providing legal advisory services and advocacy to support the Commissioner of State Revenue in matters arising from Acts administered by the State Revenue Office, including stamp duty, payroll tax and land tax.
Utilise your advisory and litigation skills in an in-house government solicitor role while undertaking meaningful legal work under the mentorship and guidance of experienced solicitors in a collaborative team environment. This will include all aspect of the conduct of litigation on behalf of the Commissioner of State Revenue, including case preparation, briefing counsel and instructing at hearing.
Reporting to a Principal Solicitor, you will be able to:
- manage your own litigation and advice case-load, with supportive legal supervision
- undertake legal research, and interpret and apply legislation in a wide variety of matters
- prepare and conduct moderately complex cases for litigation at the Victorian and Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and the Courts (predominantly the Supreme Court)
- brief and instruct Counsel at interlocutory proceedings and substantive hearings
- communicate directly with internal stakeholders, customers and their legal representatives
- provide timely legal advice to the Commissioner and his delegates.
Who we are looking for
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- been admitted as an Australian Lawyer, with
- a minimum of 2 years' post-admission experience as an Australian lawyer in the public or private sector, preferably with litigation experience in the tribunal and courts and eligibility to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate
- sound legal research and analytical skills and the ability to correctly identify key legal issues independently
- demonstrated ability to provide good quality written work in a timely manner
- excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders, including self-represented litigants
- strong computer skills and demonstrated ability to work productively in a hybrid legal environment
- the commitment to continue to grow your legal skills and tax knowledge within a supportive team environment

We are the Victorian Government's major tax collection agency, a semi-autonomous service agency which acts under a framework agreement between the Victorian Treasurer, the Secretary of the Department of Treasury and Finance and the Commissioner of State Revenue.
Our role is to administer Victoria's taxation legislation and collects a range of taxes, duties and levies. In 2013-14, we collected in excess of $13 billion in revenue for the Victorian Government.
We also administer the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG), unclaimed money (since October 2004), the growth areas infrastructure contribution (GAIC) and several subsidies and exemptions.

We have offices in Melbourne and Ballarat. Each facility has about 230 staff.
The Melbourne office deals with policy and technical issues, as well as administering document-based duties. The Ballarat office is the main processing and call centre for the taxes and duties that we administer.
