The Role
The Department of Defence seeks a motivated and organised APS 6 Project Support Officer to support the Australian Defence Force Life Course Study (ADFLCS) and Directorate of Health Research team. The ADFLCS is a longitudinal health research study that will monitor the health of ADF members during their time in service and transition to civilian life.
As the APS 6 Project Support Officer, you will assist in the initial establishment and ongoing coordination of the ADFLCS. The position will support the EL1 Project Manager and manage an APS4 team member.
Your role will include:
- Provide project support expertise through the development and management of a broad number of projects. This including progress reporting, risk assessment and management, and financial management.
- Oversee the secretariat functions for numerous advisory committees, including Senior Executive research governance committees and working groups.
- Liaise with a broad range of stakeholders including internal and external stakeholders, and facilitate cross-agency or multi-agency planning of project delivery.
- Develop high-level briefings, minutes, and Ministerials and other project communications as required.
- Effectively communicate and negotiate with project stakeholders to achieve desired project outcomes.
- Manage, mentor and oversee the tasks and deliverables of the APS4 team member.
- Adhere to the APS Values, employment principles and code of conduct.
About our Team
Joint Health Command (JHC) is responsible for the delivery of military medicine and healthcare services to Australian Defence Force (ADF). Through the delivery of best practice health services, JHC enables a healthy, ready, and supported Force from enlistment through to transition. As part of Defence People Group, we make a direct contribution to the ADF’s operational capability and provide crucial support to the warfighter.
Health Protection and Policy Branch, within JHC, supports ADF capability through stewardship, health surveillance, research, prevention and health promotion programs, policy and senior technical/medical advice.
The Directorate of Health Research is responsible for:
- Setting the strategic agenda for Defence health research.
- Reviewing and updating research governance structures processes so they align with best practice and the Australian Code for the responsible conduct of research.
- Conducting, commissioning and facilitating of health research; including the establishment of the ADF Life Course Study that will monitor and measure the health of the ADF members through their service.
- Creating internal and external research partners that enhance JHC's ability to deliver research and knowledge that enables Defence to achieve its strategic goals.
- Dissemination and translation of health research that improves the capability of the Defence Health System and the health of the ADF.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated person who enjoys working independently and as part of a small high performing research team, in a fast paced environment.
The candidate will have:
- Highly developed project support skills including experience with project governance functions (i.e. working with expert advisory committees).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to tailor delivery of complex information to suit its intended audience.
- Demonstrated capacity to engage positively with a broad range of stakeholders and negotiate beneficial outcomes.
- Demonstrated people management and supervision skills.
- Be passionate about fostering evidence-based policy, programs and practice.
- Experience with health research or tertiary qualifications in a health related discipline (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, health science, allied health and medical disciplines) will be highly regarded.
- Previous experience working in a Defence environment will be highly regarded.
