The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The EL 1 Work Health Safety Specialist works within Chief Operating Officer Division to perform complex work health and safety work within an integrated environment. They require an in-depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and policy requirements in the context of the ASA’s mission.
The EL 1 Work Health Safety Specialist will:
- Contribute to and manage the design, development, implementation and assurance of a proactive safety management system in the Agency.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders in the development and implementation of a coordinated and comprehensive safety framework for the Agency.
- Lead and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes.
- Assess and evaluate specialist safety strategy, initiatives, projects, policies and procedures to ensure compliance, establish best practices, and recommend courses of action to relevant internal and external stakeholders on complex to safety matters.
- Work across the broader ASA safety network to develop safe systems of work and accompanying performance measures that are supported by policy, and establish safety assurance mechanisms.
- Analyse complex safety issues applying expertise to identify and report on recommend courses of action.
- Actively manage key stakeholder relationships, identifying relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.
- Engage in complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects to support achievement of ASA outcomes.

- Knowledge of and experience in safety systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including work health and safety subject matter experts in an integrated workforce.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and report on complex work health and safety issues.
