The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The APS 6 Work Health Safety (WHS) Specialist works within the Chief Operating Officer Division to perform complex work health safety specialist work within an integrated workforce. They work within a team and are to apply their specialist knowledge and understanding of WHS, legislation, regulations and codes of practice to support activities within the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA). The APS 6 Work Health Safety Specialist will:
- Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and assurance of a proactive safety management system in the Agency and continuous improvement of WHS policies and procedures relevant to the ASA activities.
- Provide detailed WHS professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.
- Research and develop solutions to ASA related complex WHS issues using specialist expertise, identifying alternative courses of action and implications for WHS activities.
- Collect, analyse, interpret and report on data to provide specialist WHS advice.
- Work collaboratively across the broader internal and external WHS community and with other work health and safety specialists to provide good outcomes.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex WHS matters, anticipating and responding to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and ASA outcomes.
- Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with WHS legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the ASA. Coordinate and manage the development, implementation, monitoring and performance reporting of WHS statistics.

- Assist with the development and implementation of safety management plans.
- Knowledge of and experience in continuous improvement as it relates to WHS.
- Ability to carry out WHS audits, support WHS Workplace Inspections and support WHS education.
- Ability to undertake job safety analysis to develop safe working procedures.
- Assist with the development of a WHS Risk Management Register.
- Highly developed inter-personal skills.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders.
- The ability to think critically with well-developed problem solving skills.
