ROLE

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Officer is an integral role providing support services and advice, across the full spectrum of Work Health and Safety activities, to a broad suite of internal customers. As part of the WHS team the role will be key in enabling ASIS to meet its legislative requirements and deliver best practice

health and safety initiatives.

The role requires an engaged and capable team member with the capacity to self-start and work autonomously. The WHS Officer will be a motivated individual who enjoys developing solutions to complex safety, health and well-being issues. The WHS Officer will apply an educated and considered approach to their role and is capable of working in a non-traditional WHS environment.

As part of a high volume, high intensity team the WHS Officer will be able to meet deadlines, providing accurate advice and assistance while delivering on agreed outcomes and contributing to the management of health and safety risks at ASIS. The role requires the ability to easily develop and maintain rapport with others forming working relationships that are underpinned by collaboration and customer service and help drive the organisation’s pursuit of an imbedded safety culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

Under limited direction, the role will be responsible for the following key responsibilities and tasks:

  • Coordinate the workplace inspection program and oversee the application and follow up of required controls, remediations and support packages.
  • Coordinate the running of ASIS’ First Aid Officer, Fire Warden and Health and Safety Representative corporate networks.
  • Perform the secretariat function for the Work Health and Safety Committee (WHSC).
  • Effectively utilise the hazard and incident reporting system responding to reports in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Undertake and contribute to the completion and review of workplace risk assessments.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of workplace health and well-being initiatives.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of WHS briefings and training.
  • Provide well researched timely advice on WHS matters.

CORE SKILLS

The following is an overview of skills required to succeed in the role:

  • Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and apply WHS legislation.
  • Highly developed organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work and deliver outcomes with good attention to detail.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills across a variety of channels and contexts including written briefs, network and committee meetings, presentations, training sessions and online meetings/engagements.
  • Problem solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and remain flexible in a complex high-tempo work environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:

  • Demonstrated experience in the application of WHS legislation in the workplace.
  • Experience coordinating work groups and minor projects.
  • Relevant WHS or tertiary qualifications.
