About Us
The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) is a collaborative research powerhouse based on the shores of Sydney Harbour. We work across Australia and beyond, to understand, protect and restore coastal and marine environments. Our research programs range from nature-based solutions and marine habitat restoration to deploying ocean observing systems that stretch from the tropics to Antarctica.
We are growing — and evolving — and we’re looking for someone who can help us connect with new partners, build enduring relationships, and drive future investment in marine science.

The Role
We’re on the hunt for a passionate, relationship-driven Partnerships Manager to join the SIMS executive team.
You'll be our go-to connector — the person who builds bridges between our researchers and the outside world. You’ll engage with government, philanthropy, industry, Indigenous groups, NGOs, and communities to help bring research to life and ensure investment flows to the right places.
This is a new and important role that works closely with our CEO, COO and research leaders to strengthen SIMS’ revenue base, spark new collaborations, and position the institute for long-term impact.
If you're strategic, collaborative and thrive at the interface of science, people, and purpose — this might be your next big step.
What You’ll Do
Lead the development of strategic partnerships across academia, government, philanthropy, industry and the community
Write persuasive funding proposals, MOUs, tender applications, investment pitches and stakeholder documents
Work with researchers to co-design initiatives that align with partner goals
Identify new opportunities and build enduring relationships based on trust and shared values
Shape SIMS’ research and revenue diversification strategies by tapping into external demand
Track your progress using CRM tools, and contribute to a healthy, high-functioning team culture
What You Bring
We’re not looking for a unicorn — but we are looking for someone with substance, savvy and authenticity.
Must-haves:
Proven experience in developing partnerships and engaging stakeholders (ideally in research, environmental, or marine sectors)
Excellent written communication, with a track record of successful funding or business proposals
A strategic mindset and the ability to turn big-picture goals into action
Friendly, professional presence with the ability to navigate complexity and build trust
Strong organisational and reporting skills — you know how to work smart and keep others informed
Bonus points for:
Knowledge of the marine or environmental policy landscape
Experience working with Indigenous communities or co-designing research
Familiarity with how research operates in university or NGO contexts
What We Offer
A role with purpose — you’ll be helping shape a more sustainable marine future
Sydney based but with flexible work arrangements (including hybrid options)
Supportive and collaborative culture
Scenic working environment at Chowder Bay
A chance to make your mark in an ambitious, values-led organisation
A clear framework for success and a defined strategic roadmap
