The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Safety and Assurance Manager to provide a critical role with Melbourne's Metropolitan Remand Centre
About the Business Unit
The Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a maximum-security facility based in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Individuals on remand are alleged offenders who were not bailed when charged with a crime and are awaiting the outcome of their court case.
The MRC is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male individuals located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice and Community Safety.
About the Role
As the Safety and Assurance Manager you will provide a high level of advice and support to executive and senior leaders to drive cultural change and improve safety performance outcomes while delivering against strategic and operational objectives of the department to meet its responsibilities under the Safer Prisons Strategy, CV's Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan and the departments Health Safety and Wellbeing Strategy 2021 - 2025, together with health and safety laws (Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017, Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2014).
Some of your duties will include:
- Provide leadership and direction toward the delivery of strategic safety and wellbeing initiatives
- Undertake local incident reviews and investigations to support learning and continuous improvement
- Work collaboratively to identify process and performance gaps and influence senior executives and stakeholders in developing, promoting, implementing, and reviewing strategic initiatives
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and self assessments to identify potential hazards and unsafe conditions

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of OHS legislation, compliance codes, codes of practice and regulations and the Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances legislation and regulations.
- Relevant significant industry experience in occupational health and safety management systems.
- Demonstrated experience in the identification of OHS risks and developing, implementing and evaluating preventative strategies.
- Demonstrated expertise in consulting with senior leaders and managers in the delivery of key outcomes in health and safety, change management and related workplace improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in delivering cultural change in health, safety and wellbeing
Qualifications/requirements
- Minimum of diploma in occupational/workplace health and safety.
- A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations
