The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Safety and Assurance Manager to provide a critical role at Melbourne Assessment Prison.
About the Business Unit
Corrections Victoria is part of the Corrections and Justice Services group in the Department of Justice and Community Safety. The Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is a maximum-security correctional facility located on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The Prison is the State's main reception prison, receiving prisoners directly from the Courts and Police and provides assessment and orientation services for all male prisoners received into the prison system. The MAP also operates the Melbourne County Court, Supreme Court and Supreme Court Appeals custody facilities, located on the corners of William and Lonsdale Streets in the CBD. These facilities manage both male and female prisoners of all security ratings, operating Monday to Friday. The location also manages the St Vincent's Hospital holding cells, providing custodial liaison and coordination of all prisoner escorts attending the hospital for medical outpatient appointments from prison locations across the State. MAP also provide a custodial function at the Adult Parole Board and the Post Sentence Authority located at 50 Franklin Street West Melbourne.
About the Role
As the Safety and Assurance Manager you will provide a high level of advice and support to executive and senior leaders to drive cultural change and improve safety performance outcomes while delivering against strategic and operational objectives of the department to meet its responsibilities under the Safer Prisons Strategy, CV's Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan and the departments Health Safety and Wellbeing Strategy 2021 - 2025, together with health and safety laws.
Some of your duties will include:
- Providing leadership and direction toward the delivery of strategic safety and wellbeing initiatives working collaboratively with key partners to ensure a consistent departmental approach.
- Maintain and lead post implementation activities to embed A Safer Place to Work at maximum security prison locations.
- Undertake local incident reviews and investigations to support learning and continuous improvement including supporting the review and development of local operating procedures/policies that support outcomes from audits and assessments.
- Work collaboratively to identify process and performance gaps and influence senior executives and stakeholders in developing, promoting, implementing, and reviewing strategic initiatives that deliver a safety- first culture across the department to improve the overall safety performance of the site.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of OHS legislation, compliance codes, codes of practice and regulations and the Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances legislation and regulations.
- Relevant significant industry experience in occupational health and safety management systems.
- Demonstrated experience in the identification of OHS risks and developing, implementing and evaluating preventative strategies.
- Demonstrated expertise in consulting with senior leaders and managers in the delivery of key outcomes in health and safety, change management and related workplace improvement initiatives.
Qualifications/requirement
- Suitably qualified person with a minimum of diploma in occupational/workplace health and safety.
- Demonstrated extensive experience is desirable.
- A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations.
