The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Safety Coordinator to provide a critical role at the Metropolitan Remand Centre

About the Business Unit

The Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a maximum-security facility based in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Individuals on remand are alleged offenders who were not bailed when charged with a crime and are awaiting the outcome of their court case.

The MRC is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male individuals located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice and Community Safety.

About the Role

As the Safety Coordinator you will provide support to the Safety and Assurance Manager to partner with the operational teams by coordinating, supporting and monitoring Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within Corrections including implementing actions related to A Safer Place to Work. The primary purpose of this role is to promote safety in a collaborative and informative manner. You will work alongside Corrections staff to educate them on all safety matters including occupational violence, slips trips and falls, manual handling and psychosocial hazards.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Contribute to the delivery of operational initiatives by working collaboratively with the Safety and Assurance Manager
  • Coordinate day to day safety support and action
  • Participate in local incident reviews and investigations to support learning and continuous improvement
  • Deliver mentoring and one on one coaching for staff on safety processes, best practice methodologies and legislative requirements

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Subject matter expert in occupational health and safety management systems with demonstrated business partnering experience to meet operational demand.
  • Proven experience managing a diverse stakeholder group to deliver consistent and quality safety service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of OHS legislation, codes of practice and regulations.

Qualifications/requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or demonstrated extensive experience in safety are desirable.
  • A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations.
