The Role:
As the leading public health service in the Northern Region, we are recruiting for Senior Registrars - Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the 2026 clinical year.
Accredited senior registrar positions (including Chief Registrar, Quality registrar and Simulation/Teaching registrar) for 2026 are structured to:
- Provide opportunities to maintain and develop complex obstetric management skills, including birthing unit management, complex operative obstetrics and supervision/teaching of junior trainees and HMOs.
- Consolidate Gynaecological training with exposure to training in open, minimally invasive & vaginal surgery.
- Develop and demonstrate skills relevant to audit, leadership, and administration relevant to a busy O&G service.
- Develop specific skills relevant to intended future scope of specialist practice post-FRANZCOG.
The senior registrar positions each have a combination of:
- Service commitment to the birthing services, including antenatal clinic, acute birthing, and inpatient obstetric care (including rostered after-hours; nights and weekends).
- Service commitment to acute Gynaecological services, including acute presentations to the emergency department, inpatient care, and gynaecological outpatient services.
- Participation in quality assurance, audit, and teaching programs.
Senior registrars can rotate through one or more of the following service areas, each of which will have a program modelled on the Advanced Training Modules (ATM)
- Generalist Obstetric ATM - Advanced training in complex obstetric management skills - including birthing unit management and complex operative obstetrics. Multidisciplinary co-ordination with the ultrasound department and MFM
- Generalist Gynaecology ATM - Advanced training in open, minimally invasive & vaginal surgery.
- Hysteroscopy and laparoscopic surgery ATM - Endoscopic surgery with AGES specialists.
- Colposcopy Special Interest ATM: Independent (supervised) colposcopy training for SR intending to become C-QuIP certified.
A Chief Registrar will be selected from amongst the successful senior registrars. The role of the Chief Registrar (in addition to his/her clinical duties) is to provide leadership to the Junior Medical Staff and assist in:
- Junior medical staff rostering.
- JMS representation at the senior medical staff meetings.
- Ideally suited to a trainee in their final year, the Chief registrar role allows scope for independent operating and consolidation of consultant level skills.
- The dissemination of information to Junior medical workforce.
The role of the Simulation/Teaching registrar will include:
- The coordination of Registrar and HMO education sessions.
- Coordination of simulation training (Obstetric/ED simulation training, PROMPT, FSEP, ROBUST, Laparoscopic training, US training).
- Coordinating interview practice sessions for FRANZCOG applicants for the following year.
The role of the Quality registrar will include:
- Participation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit quality activities such as in-depth case reviews and Route Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Participation in the development and review of clinical management protocols and guidelines.
- Responsible for preparing and presenting the Gynaecology Unit Morbidity and Mortality Meeting, Gynaecology CUSP (Comprehensive Unit Safety and quality Programme) meetings and co-ordinating the Gynaecology Pre-Operative meetings.
- Responsible for preparing and presenting the Obstetric CUSP meetings.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Experience and good working knowledge of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Proven ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Good communication skills
