About the Role:

As the Archivist – Digital Preservation & Systems, you’ll safeguard digital cultural heritage at the intersection of technology, archives, and Indigenous governance. Your work will ensure the integrity, accessibility, and ethical stewardship of Aboriginal collections in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Working at the intersection of technology, archives, and Indigenous governance, you will:

Design and implement cutting-edge digital preservation systems aligned with Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS&G) and Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles.

Collaborate with Aboriginal Knowledge Holdes, IT specialists, and archivists to develop sustainable, culturally grounded solutions for long-term preservation.

Lead metadata management, risk assessment, and system integration to protect digitised and born-digital materials.

Mentor and train stakeholders in culturally sensitive digital preservation practices, building capacity across the AHA.

This is a full time 2-years fixed term position at an HEP 7 classification with the salary range being $97,863 - $105,932 per annum plus 17% superannuation, working 36.75 (1.0 FTE) hours per week.

About You

We are looking for a technically skilled archivist with a passion for long-term preservation and Indigenous cultural stewardship. You thrive where technical expertise meets community collaboration, balancing precision with cultural accountability.

You will bring:

Technical proficiency: Experience in digital preservation workflows, including file formats, metadata standards, and risk management strategies for long-term access.

Systems expertise: Skills in digital asset management systems, database administration, and IT infrastructure for archives.

Project leadership: Ability to prioritise competing demands, solve technical challenges, and deliver high-quality outcomes on time.

Relationship-building: Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, from IT teams to Aboriginal community representatives.

Highly desirable:

Experience applying IDS&G principles in archival or digital collection contexts.

A track record of collaborating with Indigenous communities to align practices with cultural protocols and self-determination goals.

A commitment to mentoring others in digital preservation best practices.

Most importantly, you understand that this work is about respect, accountability, and ensuring Aboriginal knowledge endures with integrity.
