Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

AUT's Eke Tangaroa programme offers exciting opportunities for recent Māori or Pacific graduates to embark on an academic career as a lecturer. Usually, applicants will hold a completed PhD/doctorate (or be close to completion); with the exception of the Law School where a completed LLM is also accepted. We provide a supportive environment for Māori and Pacific early career academics to teach, research and engage in academic citizenship. We want AUT to be a place where Māori and Pacific are involved in all of the university's activities including in leadership roles.

We have a range of positions through Eke Tangaroa and are seeking relevant interest within any of the following discipline areas:

Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Science - any of:

Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering (e.g. mechanical, electrical, mechatronic or software), Mathematical Sciences or other closely aligned fields.

Business - any of:

Accounting, Data Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, International Business, Organisational Behaviour, Strategy or Supply Chain Management.

Law - any of:

Māori legal issues, Te Tiriti o Waitangi/constitutional law, Tikanga Māori

Pacific customary law, Contemporary Pacific legal issues

Criminal Law, Ethics, Private commercial law, Property, Torts, Trusts

Clinical Sciences - any of:

Counselling, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Oral Health, Paramedicine, Perioperative Practice, Physiotherapy, Podiatry.

Sport, Exercise and Health - any of:

Health & Physical Education, Nutrition & Physical Activity, Outdoor Learning, Sport & Exercise Science, Sport Leadership & Management, Sport Performance Science, Youth Development & Coaching.

Staff in our different Schools have a wide range of expertise and reputable research profiles, and our research is increasingly cross-disciplinary.

About you | He kōrero mōu

We welcome applications from suitably qualified applicants of Māori or Indigenous Pacific ancestry. You will also have:

A PhD or other doctoral degree (and be within 6 years of graduating) - or be close to completion (under examination, or nearing submission for examination at the time of application). * For Law applicants only, a PhD is preferable but a completed Masters degree is also accepted.

Research and teaching interests aligning with any of the discipline areas listed above.

And you will not have held a full-time permanent academic position in a university before.

For clarification:

Indigenous Pacific: refers to indigenous people from island nations constituting the realm of New Zealand, and whose people form significant parts of the New Zealand population through longstanding cultural and economic relationships. For the purposes of Eke Tangaroa, eligible scholars will be people with ancestry from: Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, iTaukei Fiji, Rotuma, Tuvalu and Kiribati.

Previous permanent, full-time lecturing employment in a university: does not include permanent teaching assistant or research assistant experience, nor casual or temporary teaching experience. It also does not include previous lecturing experience which has been fixed-term employment; nor permanent lecturing experience in another tertiary institution other than a university (such as a polytechnic).

Start Dates: We are flexible and would expect all kaihoe have ideally begun their roles by 2 February 2026.

Interviews: We expect interviews to take place in August 2025.

Salary range: Lecturer: $92,567 - $110,166 (specific step within ranges commensurate with relevant skills and experience).
