Who is VAGO?

The Victorian Auditor General's Office (VAGO) is a critical part of Victoria's integrity system. Independent to Parliament, VAGO ensures the accountability of the State Government through audits and assurance reviews of public sector agencies. To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Such a broad range of portfolios allows our people to gain unrivalled audit experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

We have two audit portfolios within VAGO: Parliamentary Reports and Services and Financial Audit. Our audit support function is split into the Office of the Auditor-General and Corporate Services.

What's the role?

The role involves helping audit teams understand how clients' business models integrate with their IT environments, identifying and assessing IT-related risks, and developing appropriate audit responses. You will be expected to assess and test General IT Controls and information processing controls, as well as perform other specialised IT audit tasks. This is also an opportunity to contribute to transformational projects that challenge traditional approaches and enhance the way IT audit supports financial report audits.

We are open to candidates at different experience levels, and the level of appointment will reflect the skills and background of the successful applicant.

Key Responsibilities

• General IT Controls (GITCs): such as access management, change management, and IT operations
• Information Processing Controls: including automated business process controls and application-level controls
• Other specialized IT audit procedures as required (e.g., data analytics, system configurations).

• Assist financial audit teams in understanding the IT environment of audit clients.
• Identify and assess risks related to clients' IT environments.
• Collaborate with engagement teams to design and implement effective audit responses to IT-related risks.
• Perform assessments and testing of:
• Participate in projects aimed at modernising and improving IT audit methodologies.
• Explore and apply new technologies, tools, and techniques to enhance audit efficiency and effectiveness.
• Challenge traditional approaches and support continuous improvement within the IT audit function.

Experience and Qualifications

• IT Auditor Applicants: Must have at least 12 months of professional experience in IT audit, IT security or systems analysis.
• IT Audit Specialist Applicants: Must have a minimum of 24 months of experience specifically in IT audit.
• Be currently pursuing, or demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing, certification as a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) through ISACA.
• Have strong skills and genuine interest in data analytics, technology, and developing innovative solutions to automate or streamline repetitive tasks.
• Show a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
• Possess effective communication skills and the ability to engage and negotiate with stakeholders, including audit clients.
• Demonstrate sound judgment and the capability to make complex and sensitive decisions.
