POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Position Title: Ranger Coordinator, Yuwi Land and Sea Rangers
(This is an Indigenous identified position with preference given to a Yuwi individual with the relevant skills and experience)
Location: Mackay Region
Salary: $73,000 per annum (before PAYG withholding) + superannuation;
Reference Award: Miscellaneous Award
Hours of Work: 38 hours per week
Reports to: Project Manager of Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC / Yuwi Ranger Reference Group
Employment: Full time, contract until 30th June 2026
Probation: A probationary period of 6 months will apply
Housing: Not provided
ORGANISATIONAL OVERVIEW:
The Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (ICN 8608) known as YAC is the representative for the Yuwi People which was registered in February 2020 under the Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act (Cth) 2006 (CATSI Act). YAC holds the native title rights and interests as the agent entrusted to administer the Native Title rights and obligations for the Yuwi People as determined by the Federal Court of Australia. The YAC’s board of directors comprises representatives from the Yuwi apical ancestors who now hold both the legal and ancestral obligations for the descendants of those ancestors. YAC is required to meet all the legal obligations of a Corporation employing a team of staff according to Industrial Relations Law and practice, Taxation Law, and other specific obligations set out in legislation including the CATSI Act.
BACKGROUND:
The Yuwi Land and Sea Ranger Program is managed by Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC. The goal of the program is to be effective and have culturally appropriate management of the Yuwi Land and Sea. Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC is seeking an experienced and suitably skilled and dedicated Ranger Coordinator to lead our Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the culturally appropriate management and ongoing care of Yuwi traditional lands and sea country in the Mackay region.
The Ranger Coordinator will oversee a team of 10–12 rangers and be responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of our Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program. You will report to the Project Manager and ensure that the work of the team is carried out safely, effectively, and in line with Yuwi cultural values and priorities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise, mentor, and support the ranger team and working with other staff members to carry out the day to day on ground environmental and cultural management activities in accordance with an annual work plan
Plan, develop and implement land and sea management work plans related to cultural and natural resource management, and monitoring the success of these activities
Produce timely written reports on activities including the collection of data from ranger activities
Coordinate logistics, training, and operational activities and manage operational budgets and purchasing.
Foster and develop strong working relationships with stakeholders including landholders, government agencies, and community organisations to achieve environmental outcomes
Work with elders and other senior Yuwi people to and raise awareness of the importance of looking after country
Ensure work is delivered in accordance with WHS and cultural heritage protocols
Contribute towards and work within the budget and workplan.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Yuwi Project Manager, contribute to the development of annual work plans and budgets for Yuwi Rangers.
Prepare pest animal and plant, fire, erosion, environmental and cultural site management operational plans.
Supervise and assist the Yuwi Land and Sea Rangers to carry out various tasks to implement natural resource management projects. This will include:
· Implementing annual ranger work plan through operational planning, scheduling and coordination for effective delivery of land and sea activities
· Undertaking day to day staff supervision and performance management of staff, assisted by senior rangers
· Identifying needs and facilitate structured ranger training, mentoring, leadership and team development activities
· Ensuring the effective maintenance and repair of YAC vehicles and assets, including cleaning vehicles and performing regular vehicle and all Yuwi equipment (including hand and power tools) and vehicle checks
Provide the Yuwi Project Manager with accurate and timely progress reports as required for each cultural and natural resource management project in your area of responsibility. Also prepare reports for the Board from time to time.
Develop and maintain partnerships and undertake negotiations with land holders and Traditional Owners regarding access to country, funding and other support for priority activities.
Engage with Traditional Owners through the Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC Board and Elders Committee regarding management priorities, cultural priorities and restrictions, and provide advice on these issues to the manager.
Oversee logistical arrangements and data collection associated with scientific research undertaken in conjunction with other staff members and/or the Traditional Owners to survey natural habitats and record survey results as baseline data against which to measure effectiveness of protective / rehabilitative measures.
Provide information in a culturally appropriate form to Yuwi traditional owners in relation to land and sea management projects undertaken by the YAC rangers.
Contribute to the development and dissemination of communication materials that support the effective implementation and ongoing funding of YAC land and sea management projects.
Provide general logistical and other support to other YAC staff as directed by the Yuwi Project Manager.
Undertake other tasks as require from time to time by the Yuwi Project Manager.
ELIGIBILITY:
Experience in land and/or sea management, preferably in Indigenous or community-based programs
Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills and be a good team player
Understanding and respect for Aboriginal culture and cultural heritage management
Be physically fit and pass a medical test, and have the ability and genuine desire to work on country and/or in remote field environments
Hold formal qualifications in a relevant field or be willing to undertake a Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management
Possess strong administration skills and are highly organised and able to appropriately use various Information Management and Communication Technologies
Have experience working on country, managing natural and cultural resources and/or protected areas
Current driver's licence and ability to obtain relevant clearances (e.g., Blue Card, police check) – 4WD driving experience in remote areas would be desirable
You must provide your own transport to / from ranger depot at the start and end of your shift
Willingness to work flexible hours inclusive of out-of-ordinary working hours and weekends if needed
Reporting in various forms needs to be done on a daily, weekly, quarterly, 6 monthly and annual basis

· Previous experience in a similar role is highly desirable, but not essential.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
SC1: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in planning, project managing and supervising a team to undertake land and sea management activities including but not limited to fire, weed, pest animal, erosion, recording traditional knowledge and management of culturally significant sites in Yuwi country.
SC2: Demonstrated ability to supervise, assist and mentor employees to carry out and achieve tasks.
SC3: Demonstrated ability to represent YAC to Traditional Owners and other stakeholders to attain consent, operational resources for Ranger activities.
SC4: Ability to develop, manage, monitor and evaluate project sand conduct project reporting to meet milestones and demonstrate outcomes to the Yuwi Project Manager, Board and funders.
SC5: Ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
SC6: Demonstrated computer skills and experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Teams) and knowledge of data GIS data management systems.
