The University of Newcastle’s School of Law and Justice is home to an impactful and expanding Criminology program, strong community and industry engagement, and a deep commitment to social justice. As part of an interdisciplinary School ranked among the world’s top 200 law schools, our Criminology discipline leads research that drives policy reform and mentors the next generation of criminology professionals.

We are now looking for a Lecturer in Criminology, to join our growing team, in a balanced academic role.

The Role

In this role, you will be supported to deliver excellence in teaching, research and engagement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate Criminology programs, while supporting student learning and engagement.
  • Conduct and publish high-quality research, with a focus on advancing knowledge in Criminology.
  • Supervise and mentor honours and postgraduate research students
  • Seek research funding, build industry collaborations, and engage in relevant professional activities with industry and community partners.
  • Contribute to course coordination, School committees and academic governance

This permanent full-time position is based at NUspace in Newcastle’s CBD, (Awabakal and Worimi land), with the opportunity to teach online and at other campuses as required.

  • Salary package: Academic Level B - $117,226 - 139,207 plus 17% superannuation.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A doctoral degree in Criminology or Law.
  • Proven track record of high-quality research outputs and collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to gain national recognition and secure external research funding.
  • Experience supervising Honours, Masters, and/or HDR research students.
  • Strong record of quality teaching and positive student outcomes.
  • Experience in curriculum design, delivery, and course coordination across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Active contribution to academic service and external engagement initiatives.
  • Expertise in social justice, gendered violence, media criminology, cybersecurity, or forensic science is desired.
