About the role
As a QSNTS Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal services to native title claims and Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs) in accordance with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA) and the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (QLD) (ACHA). You will work as part of the broader QSNTS legal team and a smaller interdisciplinary service delivery team to assist with the commencement and progression of native title determination and compensation applications, as well as the provision of legal services and representation in relation to Future Act and cultural heritage matters.
Under the direction of the Deputy Principal Lawyer and Principal Lawyer you will be responsible for:
Preparation and Prosecution: Assist with native title applications under the NTA.
Legal Services: Provide services to PBCs and assist with NTA and ACHA matters.
Representation and Mediation: Attend meetings, prepare for mediation, and represent claimants.
Field Trips: Undertake trips to gather facts for native title applications and PBC services.
Legal Advice: Provide advice to Traditional Owners, claim groups, community members, and PBCs on native title matters.
Research and Documentation: Research legal issues, prepare communication, and review documents.
Advocacy and Representation: Provide advocacy and representation in legal matters before the Federal Court and National Native Title Tribunal.
Strategy Development: Assist with the development of strategies, policies, and procedures for native title claims and PBC support.
Relationship Building: Maintain strong relationships with clients.
Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis to support native title claims and compensation claims.
Project Management: Collaborate with the CMT for risk mitigation and continuous improvement.
Service Delivery Strategy: Promote QSNTS’ service delivery strategy.
Record Management: Manage records and correspondence as per QSNTS standards.
Knowledge Management: Ensure the currency of information on Monday.com and QSNTS TraKS Database.
About You
Legal Qualifications: Must be a qualified legal practitioner in Queensland.
Understanding of Law: Must understand native title law, corporation’s law, contract law, trust law, and property law.
Cultural Knowledge: Must understand issues affecting First Nations people.
Litigation Experience: Should have some litigation experience, preferably in the Federal Court.
Negotiation Skills: Ability to negotiate in sensitive native title and commercial matters.
Research and Analytical Skills: Excellent legal research and analytical skills required.
Drafting and Communication Skills: Must have strong drafting and communication skills.
Judgment and Decision-Making Skills: Sound judgment and decision-making skills needed.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
Teamwork: Must be able to work in a team environment.
Commitment: Must be committed to QSNTS’ values and objectives.
Travel and Driving: Must be able to travel throughout Queensland and possess a driver’s license.
