Miwatj Health is seeking a passionate and organised Regional Eye Health Coordinator on a fixed term contract to support the delivery of culturally safe and accessible eye care services across East Arnhem Land. In this dynamic role, you will coordinate visiting optometry and ophthalmology clinics under the Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS), provide on-the-ground support in remote communities, and work closely with internal teams and key partners such as the Fred Hollows Foundation, Brien Holden Vision Institute, and Royal Darwin Hospital. Your work will also contribute to broader chronic disease initiatives by facilitating diabetic eye care and retinopathy screening. The ideal candidate will have strong logistical and stakeholder engagement skills and be committed to improving eye health outcomes for Aboriginal communities. This role requires fortnightly travel via light aircraft and offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in remote health care.
Successful applicants will have access to a range of benefits, including:
- Competitive salary of $82,882 - $95,145 per annum + 11.5% superannuation
- Ability to Salary Package up to $15,900pa plus a further $2,650pa on Meals and Entertainment
- 6 Weeks annual leave + 17.5% Leave Loading (pro-rata)
- 12 Days Personal and 5 Days Compassionate Leave (pro-rata)

Miwatj Health is an independent Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service. Established in 1992, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling YolÅ‹u powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.
Essential Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the issues faced by Yolngu people in remote settings and experience in primary health care or chronic disease management, particularly in eye health and diabetes care. Strong organisational and coordination skills are essential, as well as the ability to support visiting clinicians, manage logistics, and ensure smooth delivery of outreach services. The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build trust with Aboriginal clients and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. A commitment to learning about Aboriginal health issues and the ability to work independently in remote settings are key, along with a willingness to travel regularly to remote communities, including overnight stays as required.

Miwatj Health has its administrative base in the town of Nhulunbuy, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Our clinics are located in Nhulunbuy, Gunyangara (also known as Marngarr), Galiwin’ku and Yirrkala, providing a walk-in service for all acute and preventive care needs. In addition to these fixed clinics, our outreach teams provide a regular visiting service to a number of nearby communities including Birritjimi, Galupa, Gunyangara, Garrathiya Plains, Yirrkala, and within the Galiwin’ku community.

◾The provision of clinical services to Aboriginal communities in the East Arnhem Land region, including both acute care and longer-term preventive care
◾Implementation of a range of population/public health programs and strategies which address the underlying causes of illness
◾Advocacy in support of the right of Aboriginal people to control their own health services and for such health services to receive resources and funding adequate to address the health problems of the region
◾Ensuring efficient, accountable administrative and financial systems support for the delivery of our services. The underlying philosophy of Miwatj Health is the fundamental right of Aboriginal people to control their own health services.
