Aboriginal Hostels Limited’s (AHL) vision is to improve the quality of life and opportunities for First Nations People through their national network of hostels.

AHL hostels are like a home away from home for people needing to travel for access to services or for work and education opportunities. They provide comfortable, culturally safe and affordable accommodation, three meals a day and a welcoming environment for those who stay.

The Opportunity

Working closely with the local community, you will provide high quality care to people staying in hostels and ensure residents are well looked after.

AHL is proud to be one of the largest employers of First Nations people in the Australian Public Service (APS) with First Nations employees making up approximately 50% of their workforce.

The Role

There are multiple opportunities to join AHL at their Nhulunbuy Hostel as a Cook. You will:

• Prepare and serve meals following AHL’s 4-week rotating set menus
• Maintain compliance with Food Safety Standards
• Assist with food ordering, receive and monitor food and kitchen supplies
• Clean and maintain kitchen and kitchen equipment
• Prepare the dining room for meal times and clean up afterwards

The Ideal Person

We’re looking for people with a passion for excellent customer service.

While it is a bonus you have experience with similar work, if you can follow procedures and have a positive attitude, we encourage you to apply.

People with a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and issues affecting First Nations peoples are well suited to these roles.

Salary / Rate

Roles are offered either as a permanent full-time (75 hours a fortnight) or part time (less than 37.5 hours a week).

• $59,520 - $64,877 + 15.4% Super (pro-rated for part-time positions)
• Generous shift penalties for work after hours, night shifts, weekends and public holidays
• Salary packaging options available that can reduce your taxable income and increase your take-home pay
