Position Overview

As Operations Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving operational excellence, strategic implementation, and business performance.

This role demands a highly capable leader with significant experience in the building and maintenance industry, including a deep understanding of general construction, carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems, basic engineering, activity and infrastructure design.

The successful candidate will be confident in managing complex maintenance programs, be highly skilled in trade-based project management, and be able to guide and lead maintenance teams through the unique demands of a busy, multifaceted camp environment.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will provide high-level guidance, departmental financial oversight, risk management, and operational innovation. Your leadership will enhance business efficiencies, elevate customer experiences, and reinforce our commitment to safety, quality, and cultural excellence.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Operational Excellence

Lead and oversee Maintenance, Program, Guest Services, and Catering teams.

Provide expert-level leadership to the Maintenance Team, particularly in trade-based disciplines such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, construction, and general infrastructure.

Guide all departments through critical evaluation and complex problem solving.

Ensure seamless execution of strategic and operational initiatives.

Drive efficiency, cost control, and business performance measures.

Develop and implement best-in-class operational strategies.

Maintain and enhance high-performance workplace culture

Strategic Planning & Business Growth

Align operational functions with company-wide goals and growth strategies.

Implement financial management, forecasting, and budgeting at the departmental level.

Identify and implement opportunities for innovation and efficiency.

Risk Management, Compliance & Mitigation

Oversee activity compliance, safety audits, and health/building inspections.

Ensure engineering and infrastructure compliance with relevant standards.

Lead WorkSafe and OH&S compliance across departments.

Implement proactive risk management strategies and incident response protocols.

Financial Oversight & Cost Management

Monitor margins and profitability across departments.

Conduct monthly and quarterly financial reviews.

Implement cost-saving measures and procurement strategies.

Ensure maintenance solutions are sustainable, cost-effective, and of high quality.

Project Management

Lead infrastructure and facilities-based projects from conception to completion.

Bring expert knowledge in building systems, asset longevity, and infrastructure planning.

Engage confidently with contractors, engineers, and design professionals.

Deliver projects on time and within budget.

Supplier Engagement and Guest Satisfaction

Maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and industry professionals.

Understand the operational needs of schools and ensure camp-wide operations exceed expectations.

Oversee quality assurance programs across accommodation and facility services.

Team Development & Culture Building

Lead, mentor, and develop department heads and operational teams.

Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Ensure staff rostering, logistics, and scheduling align with business demands and budgets.

Act as a role model, reinforcing The Summit’s values and leadership excellence.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Execution of trade-based infrastructure and maintenance programs.

Achievement of financial performance targets (cost control, margins, budgeting).

Operational efficiency across all managed departments.

Maintenance of high safety standards and regulatory compliance.

Guest satisfaction and quality assurance metrics.

Leadership effectiveness and team engagement levels.

Meeting & Reporting Structure Weekly Meetings & Check-Ins

Weekly Level 10 Meetings (senior leadership)

Departmental leadership meetings

Operations check-ins with the Head of Maintenance

Performance reporting with individual department heads

Strategic alignment meetings with the CEO

Qualifications & Experience

Proven leadership in an Operations Manager, General Manager, or senior operational role.

Extensive experience in facility and infrastructure management, including construction, engineering, plumbing, electrical, activity and camp-style accommodation.

Strong project management skills across diverse maintenance and development portfolios.

Solid understanding of compliance, safety, and general construction guidelines

Strategic and financial acumen with a track record of budget accountability.

Experience in tourism, experiential education, or adventure programming is advantageous.

Remuneration & Benefits

Salary: $100,000 - $120,000 per annum (based on experience and proven achievements).

Superannuation: Paid in addition to salary.

Technology: Laptop provided by The Summit.

Phone Allowance: Existing personal plan covered, or a new device provided.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
