The role of Payroll Officer is a vital one in this dynamic and growth-oriented agricultural client. Reporting to the Financial Controller, it represents a huge opportunity for a driven and highly skilled professional to take ownership of their own time, processes and outcomes as an autonomous, valued and respected team member.
The role
As an experienced Payroll Officer officer, the essence of the role will be generally familiar to you. As you'd expect, there are the basic processes for the full employment lifecycle as well as regular pay runs, including scheduling, reporting, processing, lodging, paying and so on. You'll use the Time And Access Timesheet System as well as MYOB or similar accounting software, as well as spreadsheets and word documents as appropriate.
Beyond regular payroll processing functions, in harvest season you'll assist with the coordination of seasonal workers, from planning and coordinating through to logistical aspects. This annual extra creates a great growth opportunity for anyone seeking a new challenge and to build news skills.
There is also the opportunity for you to contribute ideas in how to continually improve and upgrade the way things are done. Software systems are due for review in 2025, and we would like your perspectives to be a part of that. You can make a difference.
Skill and experience requirements
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Experience working in an autonomous payroll function.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of how to access and use relevant Industrial Acts, Superannuation Guarantee Legislation, Awards and Agreements.
- Competence and experience in the use of payroll packages
- Intermediate skills in MS Word and Excel.
- A strong understanding of payroll and associated principles, processes, privacy and legislation.
- Excellent time management and prioritisation, including when the pressure is on. Your naturally strategic, professional and calm approach will see you thrive in this.
- As much as any of those things, your personal style will be one that is high in both work ethic and willingness to contribute to the current highly positive, open and cooperative workplace. The morals of the business are transparent and ethical, and the way work is done is all about taking ownership of one’s own work while contributing and cooperating with others.
- A formal qualification is helpful but not essential.
The industry is decentralised and seasonal!
Being decentralised means that you will need to be able to coordinate and communicate with others where you will need to provide structure, certainty and guidance, but then enlist their willing support. Some won't be focused as much on process or detail as you, and you'll need to be patient, calm and understanding as you resolve queries and other issues, especially in-season.
The seasonality makes the work exciting and demanding, both in preparation and through the busiest times at the start of harvest. Help is, of course, at hand during these times but you're still going to be busier than usual. In avoiding the boredom of humdrum routine in roles where every day, week and month is the same, for high performers this seasonal change of pace is exciting, challenging and fulfilling.
