The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a dedicated Leading Hand – Turf Maintenance to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional to step into a leadership role and help shape the quality of our parks and open spaces.
As the Leading Hand, you will work closely with the Supervisor Turf to provide effective, on-the-ground leadership to the Turf Maintenance team. Your role is vital in ensuring that scheduled maintenance activities are carried out efficiently and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation of monthly and seasonal turf maintenance programs.
- Provide day-to-day in-field supervision, technical advice, and support to Turf Maintenance Officers.
- Act as the primary point of contact in the field for community members and contractors, delivering professional and accurate information.
- Monitor the health and condition of turf areas to ensure service standards are consistently met.
About You
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in turf or parks maintenance and proven experience operating a range of turf care equipment. You will have a hands-on leadership style, a commitment to safety, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic outdoor environment.
To be successful, you will have:
- Experience in turf or parks maintenance operations.
- Proficiency in using turf care equipment (e.g. edgers, brush cutters, ride-on mowers, hand tools).
- Experience in basic worksite traffic management.
- Certificate III in Horticulture, Sports Turf Management, or equivalent relevant experience.
- A current 'MR' class driver’s licence.
What We Offer
This is a permanent full-time position offering a salary of $72,038 – $79,204 per annum (depending on skills and experience), plus superannuation and a Leading Hand Allowance of $27.24 per week.

On 1 July, 1959 the City of Nedlands was proclaimed at the command of Governor Sir Charles Gairdner, in the packed Dalkeith Civic Hall. Mr Allan Jenkins read out the proclamation and the Minister for Local Government, Mr Leslie Logan, M.L.C. conducted the official swearing in ceremony of the new Mayor, John Charles Smith, the twelve new Councillors and the auditors. He then appointed Mr Allan Jenkins as the City's first Town Clerk. Among those present was MLA for Nedlands, Deputy Premier Charles Court.
Significant events and dates that contributed to the development of the City of Nedlands:
1893: The first move to establish Local Government in our area with the creation of the Claremont Road Board on 31 March, 1893, governing a total area of ten square miles; forty years after the death of Adam Armstrong, Nedlands' first resident.
1898: Approximately two square miles excised to form the Municipality of Claremont.
1932: Name changed from Claremont Road Board to Nedlands Road Board.
1956: Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the Municipality of Nedlands.
1959: One hundred and thirty years after the first British settlement around the Swan River, Nedlands achieved City status. Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the City of Nedlands while under the guidance of Mayor John Charles Smith Esq., JP Mayor.
