The City of Nedlands is on the lookout for a skilled and motivated Leading Hand – Civil Maintenance to take charge on the ground and help guide our awesome Civil Maintenance team. If you’re someone who’s just as comfortable giving direction as you are getting your hands dirty, this is your chance to make a real impact — not just on roads and footpaths, but on the community you serve.
About the Role:
This is a full-time permanent position, reporting directly to the Supervisor Civil Maintenance, where you’ll be overseeing and participating in civil maintenance and minor construction projects across the City. From verges and drainage to traffic islands and footpaths, you’ll make sure the work gets done — safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
As the in-field leader, you’ll:
- Support, guide, and motivate the Civil Works Operators
- Plan daily tasks and adapt to changing priorities on the fly
- Maintain strong communication with residents, contractors, and service providers
- Operate tools, vehicles, and machinery (and make sure the crew’s doing it right, too)
- Set out work sites, ensure accurate levels, and keep things ticking smoothly
- Keep clear, accurate records (yes, the paperwork matters too!)
- Be the safety champion on site and lead by example
Must-haves:
- HR Class Driver’s Licence
- Construction White Card
- Basic Worksite Traffic Management Certificate
- At least 3 years’ experience in civil maintenance or construction
- Solid understanding of roadworks, drainage, concreting, paving, etc.
- Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills
Nice-to-haves (we love an all-rounder):
- Front End Loader Ticket
- Forklift, Bobcat, Excavator Licences
- Integrated Tool Carrier experience
- Provide First Aid Certificate
Salary & Benefits:
$72,038 – $79,204 per annum, depending on your skills and experience, plus superannuation.

On 1 July, 1959 the City of Nedlands was proclaimed at the command of Governor Sir Charles Gairdner, in the packed Dalkeith Civic Hall. Mr Allan Jenkins read out the proclamation and the Minister for Local Government, Mr Leslie Logan, M.L.C. conducted the official swearing in ceremony of the new Mayor, John Charles Smith, the twelve new Councillors and the auditors. He then appointed Mr Allan Jenkins as the City's first Town Clerk. Among those present was MLA for Nedlands, Deputy Premier Charles Court.
Significant events and dates that contributed to the development of the City of Nedlands:
1893: The first move to establish Local Government in our area with the creation of the Claremont Road Board on 31 March, 1893, governing a total area of ten square miles; forty years after the death of Adam Armstrong, Nedlands' first resident.
1898: Approximately two square miles excised to form the Municipality of Claremont.
1932: Name changed from Claremont Road Board to Nedlands Road Board.
1956: Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the Municipality of Nedlands.
1959: One hundred and thirty years after the first British settlement around the Swan River, Nedlands achieved City status. Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the City of Nedlands while under the guidance of Mayor John Charles Smith Esq., JP Mayor.
