AUSTRAC is hiring for positions to join the Intelligence Analytics team where our purpose is to service the data analytics needs of the Intelligence Division and provide data analytics support for the intelligence needs of partner agencies.

APS6 Senior Engineer, Artificial Intelligence

As a Senior AI Engineer, you’ll be hands-on in developing and delivering high-impact AI and ML model automation. You'll play a crucial role in building and optimising AI and ML models that transform data into financial information and intelligence. As a curious thinker, you'll thrive on experimenting with models and systems and willing to explore innovative ways to compose AI-powered solutions for SMEs across AUSTRAC.

At the APS6 level, we're looking for:

Programming Skills - Excellent software engineering skills, including experience in delivering production-grade software in mainstream general-purpose languages such as Python, and Java or JavaScript.

Knowledge and experience in AI and Machine Learning Operations and model development Operations, Containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes). Cloud platforms experience is also desirable

Communication - ability to understand and manage client expectations to effectively manage and monitor models in production. Ability to communicate transparently, troubleshoot issues and effectively manage change processes.

Qualifications - Graduate degree in computer or data science or relevant professional industry certifications is desirable.

EL1 Lead Engineer, Artificial Intelligence

As Lead Engineer AI, you'll provide strategic direction and technical leadership across AI initiatives.

You'll be a pivotal, technical lead and the driving force behind developing and delivering scalable, and secure AI solutions. As an established AI/ML engineer, you will architect and lead the implementation of and strategically deploy AI/ML models that support AUSTRAC's operational and strategic priorities.

At the EL1 level, we're looking for:

Extensive experience in AI/ML development, with recent experience on implementing large language models with assurance and quality metrics for use of automated agents.

Programming skills - Excellent software engineering skills, including experience leading the delivery of production-grade software in mainstream general-purpose languages such as Python, and Java or JavaScript.

AI/ML engineering - experience working with model management, model evaluation, and ML pipelines along with creating large, complex datasets that improve business outcomes.

Applied knowledge of cloud-based services (eg: AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization (eg: Docker), and orchestration tools (eg: Kubernetes).

Exceptional leadership and communication skills – to inspire teams and explain complex AI concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications - Graduate degree in computer or data science or relevant professional industry certifications is desirable.

The key duties of the positions include:

Depending on the role you've applied for, you may be expected to:

Model Development and Optimisation

· Design, develop and maintain scalable, assured machine learning models.

· Implement and apply data preprocessing, feature engineering, and optimisation techniques to enhance model accuracy and performance.

· Establish and maintain model training, validation, and evaluation metrics to ensure quality and consistency.

Integration and Infrastructure Management

· Build and maintain API integration points to operationalise model outputs.

· Manage and optimise model-serving and ML infrastructure in collaboration with platform teams.

· Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to align AI solutions with business and technical needs.

Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

· Implement and action monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting processes to ensure system reliability and performance.

· Drive workflow improvements through automation and prompt-engineering optimisation.

· Evaluate and refine models and systems to improve scalability, efficiency, and value delivery.

Governance and Integrity

· Ensure adherence to data security, privacy, policy and compliance.

Affirmative Measures

This vacancy is being advertised concurrently under a general round, an affirmative measures disability round and an affirmative measures indigenous round.

We offer competitive remuneration and great conditions, including:

Annual leave of 4 weeks (20 days) per year + additional paid Christmas close down.
