About the Role
As the Safety Officer, you will play a key role in supporting and improving workplace health and safety across council operations. Working collaboratively as part of the Safety team, you will help implement WHS policies and procedures, facilitate audits and inspections, and provide expert advice to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and council standards.
The Safety Officer position will suit someone who enjoys working across varied environments, from office settings to field operations, and who is passionate about promoting a proactive, collaborative safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor WHS systems, policies, and procedures across council departments
- Conduct and participate in workplace inspections, internal audits, and incident investigations
- Identify hazards, assess risks, and drive the implementation of corrective actions
Support Health and Safety Representatives and consult with workers and contractors on safety matters - Prepare WHS reports, maintain accurate records, and assist with safety data analysis
Coordinate WHS training requirements and promote ongoing safety awareness initiatives - Contribute to compliance with State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) and SafeWork NSW standards
Candidate Requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety or a related discipline
- Proven experience in a WHS role, ideally within a complex or multi-site organisation
- Strong knowledge of WHS legislation and risk management principles
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Current Class C Driver’s Licence
- Understanding of WHS audit processes and self-insurer safety systems
- Experience in local government or public sector environments
