The Role

The UASPO Systems Engineer will be a key member of the Small Uncrewed Aircraft System (SUAS) Engineering Team, reporting to the SUAS Engineering Manager. This role is responsible for supporting the acquisition and sustainment of SUAS capabilities through the application of Defence engineering and oversight frameworks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting engineering activities in accordance with the Army Aviation Systems Branch Engineering Management System and the UASPO Engineering Handbook.
  • Reviewing and developing engineering documentation to support UAS products across acquisition and sustainment phases.
  • Supporting project and quality management activities.
  • Monitoring engineering performance and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Undertaking administrative tasks, including the preparation of briefs and correspondence, and engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing support to the Chief Engineer, Engineering Managers, and the broader UASPO program as required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate alignment with Defence values and behaviours, and will be capable of working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills are essential.

Security and Export Control Requirements: This position requires access to technology controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)—a United States (US) law governing defence articles, technical data, and services. Access restrictions may apply based on current or previous citizenships and permanent residency status. Defence may be able to apply workforce exemptions; however, applicants will be required to disclose all current and former citizenships and residencies to determine eligibility and ensure compliance with international obligations.

About our Team

The Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Program Office (UASPO) is a component of the Army Aviation Systems Branch (AASB), within the Joint Aviation Systems Division (JASD) of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). The Program Office comprises a Business Management Unit (BMU) and three recently restructured teams: one dedicated to future capability development, and two focused on the delivery and sustainment of Tactical and Small Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) programs.

UASPO is a trusted delivery partner, consistently achieving agreed capability outcomes for the Capability Manager while ensuring value for money. The Program Office maintains strong, collaborative relationships with both Defence and Industry stakeholders, which are central to its success. The majority of the UASPO workforce is based in Brisbane.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to operate under broad direction to deliver complex engineering and oversight activities within a multidisciplinary, integrated workforce. They will be accountable for maintaining a strong understanding of Defence engineering and oversight frameworks and applying this knowledge to achieve high-quality outcomes.

The successful candidate will possess highly developed written and verbal communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with key aviation stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in engineering and oversight systems within a Defence or similarly complex environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on issue resolution.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • Proven ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with engineering and oversight activities.
  • Expertise in providing policy advice and technical guidance within your area of specialisation.

Application Closing Date: Monday 10 November 2025
