The Role

As a DevOps Engineer, you will be instrumental in ensuring that mission systems are agile, secure, and resilient – supporting sensitive and time-critical operations. You will design, build, automate, and manage platforms and pipelines that enable rapid development, deployment, and monitoring of applications and infrastructure.

Your work will be grounded in modern DevOps practices, with a strong emphasis on continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), infrastructure as code (IaC), and bespoke systems and infrastructure to support ASD’s missions.

At ASD, we will invest in your skills through certifications, hands-on training, and tailored learning pathways to guide you through your career as a DevOps Engineer.

Examples of the systems and tools you would be expected to work with include:

  • CI/CD and Source Control
  • Infrastructure Automation
  • Containerisation and Orchestration
  • Monitoring and Logging
  • On-premises/hybrid and Cloud Platforms including High-performance computing environments and complex network architectures.

ASD 5 DevOps Engineer:

Key Duties:

  • Under broad direction:
  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support automated testing, deployment, and release management across multiple environments.
  • Build and manage infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Support containerisation and orchestration on platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure system health, performance, and security.
  • Manage and integrate with cloud-native services in a unique security environment, including provisioning, configuration, automation, and cost optimisation.
  • Support efforts of your team to collaborate with various development and operations teams to ensure seamless integration of applications into existing and newly generated workflows.
  • Work with your peers and leadership to troubleshoot and resolve issues across systems, pipelines, and environments.
  • Contribute to discussions regarding the application of security best practices and standards across systems, pipelines, and environments.

ASD 6 DevOps Engineer:

Key Duties:

  • Identifies tasks to meet the objective of the organisation through:
  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support automated testing, deployment, and release management across multiple environments.
  • Build and manage infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Support containerisation and orchestration on platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure system health, performance, and security.
  • Manage and integrate with cloud-native services in a unique security environment, including provisioning, configuration, automation, and cost optimisation.
  • Promotes the objective of the organisation to various development and operations teams to ensure alignment of DevOps workflows of ASD’s most critical systems.
  • Effectively utilise individual and team capabilities when troubleshooting and resolving issues.
  • Identify and implement security best practices and standards across systems, pipelines, and cloud environments. Clearly communicate the decisions made including your reasoning and opportunities for future improvement.
  • Demonstrate leadership by providing technical mentoring and targeted upskilling to junior staff, fostering capability development and ensuring high-quality outcomes.
