Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and passionate Café Manager to lead our team and oversee the daily operations of The Honest Crumb, a busy 100% dedicated gluten-free café and retail space.
This is a premium operational role made possible by our direct partnership with Gluten Free 4 U, a national, award-winning, certified gluten-free bakery. This partnership allows us to offer an exceptional retail experience, stocking nearly 100 frozen GF items, ranging from tasty pies and fluffy bagels to decadent chocolate cakes and rocky road slices.
The ideal candidate will combine strong leadership and hospitality skills with an unwavering, commitment to allergen safety and the integrity of our dedicated gluten-free facility. You will be instrumental in managing this specialised retail operation while driving customer satisfaction and revenue growth.
Key responsibilities
The Cafe Manager will be responsible for a wide range of duties that ensure the smooth, efficient, and profitable operation of the business while upholding our strict allergen-safe environment. These include:
Operations, safety and allergen control:
Overseeing quality control and food presentation to ensure every item meets our high standards before reaching the customer, with a primary focus on maintaining the integrity of our 100% gluten-free facility.
Ensuring rigorous compliance with all health and safety regulations, maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment, and implementing best practices for managing other common allergens.
Developing and enforcing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for receiving, storing, preparing, and serving food and beverages to prevent any risk of cross-contamination, even in a dedicated environment.
Managing stock ordering and minimising wastage through efficient inventory practices and meticulously auditing all incoming ingredients and products to verify their certified gluten-free status.
Making top-quality coffee and confidently operating the point-of-sale (POS) register during peak times and as required.
Leadership and team management:
Hiring, training, and supervising staff members, with a strong emphasis on allergen awareness, safe handling protocols, and the critical importance of a dedicated gluten-free space.
Creating and managing staff rosters to ensure optimal coverage during all operating hours.
Maintaining a positive and professional image for the cafe, both internally and externally, serving as a role model for all staff.
Conducting regular team meetings and performance reviews.
Business Development and Growth:
Developing and implementing strategies to increase revenue, including promotions, special events, and seasonal menu changes that align with our allergen-safe mission.
Driving social media growth and engagement, effectively communicating our dedicated gluten-free status and safety commitment to the community.
Staying up-to-date on industry trends and developments related to celiac disease, food allergies, and specialty diets, and continuously seeking ways to improve the cafe's operations and profitability.
Qualifications and Experience:
At least 2 years experience in a supervisory or management role within the food service or retail industry.
Demonstrated ability to train staff on allergen protocols and food safety.
Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong organisational, time-management, and problem-solving abilities.
Current certification in Food Handling/Safety is essential.
We are also actively looking for Cafe All-Rounders and strongly encourage applications from candidates who may not have prior supervisory or management experience.
