The Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom is seeking a Policy & Communications Officer to play a leading role in our public-facing campaigns to promote media freedom and strengthen democracy.

The Alliance for Journalists' Freedom (AJF) is a highly-regarded not-for-profit organisation led by the prominent Australian journalist Peter Greste. It campaigns for press freedom and opposes laws that restrict the ability of journalists to do their work. Most recently the AJF has been a vocal opponent of moves to water down freedom of information laws [link]. It also campaigns for a Media Freedom Act and Journalism Australia, a body to support better professional standards in journalism.

The primary responsibility of the Policy and Communications Officer role is to assist the Executive Director and the Board in promoting the value of a free media.

We are seeking a media-savvy self-starter who is comfortable working independently and without close supervision on a range of diverse tasks. They will need to have strong written and verbal communications skills and be adaptable in a fast-moving environment. The role will particularly suit someone who follows the news closely and is well-informed about politics, public policy and related areas of debate.

The successful applicant will have experience in communications, public policy, advocacy or campaign work. They will be involved in drafting policy documents and submissions as well as fundraising, coordinating events, marketing (including social media) and corporate governance.

While the preferred location is Melbourne, we can accommodate remote working arrangements.
