The Organisation

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia’s ocean. We are Australia’s leading ocean conservation organisation and one of the founding members of Australia’s conservation movement.

We are a community of ocean and coastal lovers across the nation, working to protect our precious marine wildlife and secure healthy seas. As an independent charity, our team of expert advocates and campaigners work daily to safeguard Australia’s ocean and coasts.

Our Strategic Plan 2026–2030 sets out five goals: driving climate action for the ocean, protecting threatened species and habitats, safeguarding critical places, building support for our ocean, and strengthening AMCS as an effective and sustainable organisation.

Location: Flexible remote working options considered within Australia and hybrid arrangements also considered that are supported in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane CBDs.

Hours: 1.0 Full-Time (38 hours per week), 0.8 Part-Time option may be considered

Salary: AMCS Salary Classification Guide Level 6, aligned with the Level 7 Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. Salary circa $111,000–$120,000 per annum (pro rata if part-time), plus superannuation (12.5%).

Contract Period: Permanent, ongoing role.

The Role

The Fossil Fuels Campaign Manager plays a central role in advancing AMCS’s climate and ocean agenda.

This senior leadership position leads AMCS’ major, national campaign to prevent new offshore fossil fuel exploration, seismic testing and extraction, while building momentum for a rapid transition beyond fossil fuels towards a climate-resilient ocean future.

Reporting to the Campaigns Director the Manager develops and delivers strategic campaigns that protect marine ecosystems, influence policy and mobilise public support to end offshore fossil fuel development. The role combines campaign strategy, advocacy, partnerships and team leadership, working closely with AMCS’ communications, fundraising and science teams to achieve tangible conservation and climate outcomes.

Reporting and Accountability

This role reports to the Campaigns Director and is responsible for managing campaign and project staff within the assigned portfolio. Direct reports currently include a Campaigner, with potential for additional campaign, policy and/or community engagement roles as the team grows.

Travel

The role requires regular travel within Australia, and occasional international travel, for campaign, partnership and advocacy purposes.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver AMCS’ Mission and Strategy

Lead and implement campaigns that advance AMCS’ Strategic Plan goals, translate AMCS’ vision into measurable conservation and policy outcomes that halt new offshore fossil fuel development and support a just energy transition.

People and Team Leadership

Manage and mentor staff, fostering a values-driven, inclusive and high-performing team culture that prioritises wellbeing, accountability and professional growth.

Partnerships, Advocacy and Influence

Build strong relationships with governments, First Nations partners, NGOs, scientists and communities. Engage with decision-makers and media to influence policy and public debate on offshore fossil fuel and climate issues.

Organisational Leadership and Collaboration

Contribute to AMCS’ leadership culture through active collaboration across portfolios and integration with communications, fundraising and supporter engagement.

Governance and Accountability

Ensure campaign activities are ethical, independent and legally compliant. Manage budgets, grants and risk reporting to deliver transparent and effective campaign outcomes.

Fundraising and Growth

Partner with fundraising teams to secure and manage philanthropic and grant support for campaign priorities, demonstrating impact and building long-term investment.

Innovation and Adaptability

Champion creative, evidence-based campaigning and adapt resources and strategies to respond to emerging threats and opportunities in the fossil fuel and energy transition space.

Eligibility

Right to work in Australia (citizen, permanent resident, or valid work visa).

Willingness to travel nationally and occasionally internationally.

Commitment to AMCS’ mission, values, and non-partisan independence.

Selection Criteria

Leadership and People Management

Demonstrable success and experience managing campaign teams or projects in environmental or advocacy fields. Proven ability to motivate and support high-performing teams through growth and change. Clear experience in building and maintaining a collaborative organisational culture across functions.

Campaign Leadership and Strategy

Demonstrated success in designing and delivering campaigns that achieved policy or behavioural change. Political acumen, experience and capacity to navigate complex stakeholder environments.

Advocacy, Influence and Partnerships

Strong advocacy and negotiation skills with government and industry. Experience building partnerships with First Nations partners, NGOs and communities. Confidence as a credible media spokesperson.

Organisational Contribution

Experience integrating campaigns with communications and fundraising functions. Financial literacy and ability to manage budgets, grants and reporting responsibilities.

Knowledge and Expertise

Understanding or awareness of Australian marine conservation, climate and energy policy, or offshore fossil fuel development and regulation. Familiarity with environmental law and policy processes an advantage.
