About the Service
The Bridge to Belonging service is a Commonwealth funded program assisting newly-arrived refugee and migrant families and individuals to acquire knowledge, skills, strategies and support networks that support integration and successful settlement into Australian communities. Bridge to Belonging is a partnership between Communicare (Lead) and Centrecare, and provides a range of SETS services to individuals and families in the South East and South West metropolitan regions of Perth, and Mandurah. This support includes casework, supported playgroups, life skills workshops and youth specific development services.
The Role
The Women’s Advocate position strengthens Bridge to Belonging capacity to support migrant and refugee women experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, family and domestic violence through intervention and support, advocacy and information and referral. Through a trauma informed approach, the position works alongside women to empower them to make choices that improve their safety. It also establishes collaborative links to other family and domestic violence programs, including to support more streamlined referral pathways to identified support services.
This is a part-time time position based in Cannington; however, flexibility is required to work across the Perth South East region in an outreach capacity to respond to the diverse needs of the target group.
A few specifics:

  • Identify, assess and respond to safety issues as they relate to women and children experiencing family and domestic violence.
  • Undertake risk assessments and safety planning to ensure the safety of women and children.
  • Provide specialist assessment, support plans, telephone intervention, in person support, information and referral for women experiencing, or at risk of experiencing family and domestic violence.
  • Advocate for clients experiencing family and domestic violence based on client-defined goals and with the consent of the client.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to assist in maximising women, children and family safety.
  • Provide advice and support to Settle In staff to assist in risk assessments, safety planning and information provision.

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in the human services field and/or significant experience in the family and domestic violence sector.
  • Unrestricted drivers’ licence.
  • Satisfactory National Police Clearance (not older than 6 months from the issue date).
  • Current Working with Children Check card.
  • Previous experience working in a similar role, preferably within settlement services and/or with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse target group.
