About the Opportunity Our client is a long-established mechanical services contractor with a national footprint and a strong reputation across the southern states. They are now in an exciting growth phase in Queensland, recently securing several major projects – including a landmark hospital development.
To support this growth, they are seeking a Drafting Team Leader to head up the state drafting function, overseeing a team of experienced drafters and trainees in the delivery of coordinated HVAC designs and shop drawings for complex, large-scale projects.

The Role Reporting to senior management, you will take ownership of the QLD drafting team, ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and compliance. You’ll play a pivotal role in resourcing, mentoring, and developing your team, while liaising closely with engineers, project managers, site teams, and clients.

This role would suit someone currently working with a Tier 1 or Tier 2 mechanical contractor in a Lead Draftsperson, Senior Draftsperson, or 2IC role who is ready to take the next step into full team leadership and management.

Key Responsibilities;

• Lead and manage the state drafting team, including training, mentoring, and performance development.
• Be hands-on in producing and coordinating HVAC documentation for large, complex projects while guiding the team’s outputs.
• Ensure drawings comply with company standards, Australian Standards, and BIM guidelines.
• Forecast and manage labour requirements, monitoring drawing hours and project efficiency.
• Collaborate with engineering and project management to identify design improvements and cost-saving opportunities.
• Drive BIM/Revit adoption and continuous improvement initiatives across the drafting function.
• Represent the business in client and site coordination meetings.

About You You are an experienced leader with a strong background in HVAC drafting, known for your technical expertise, attention to detail, and ability to inspire a team. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing the demands of multiple projects while maintaining high standards.

Essential Skills & Experience

• 10+ years’ drafting experience in mechanical services / building services.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, construction methods, and industry codes.
• Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM workflows.
• Demonstrated people management and leadership skills.
• Ability to problem-solve, forecast workloads, and deliver under deadlines.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable

• Certificate IV in Drafting (Air Conditioning & Mechanical Services) or equivalent.
• Training or certification in leadership/management.
