Stary Norton Halphen are seeking a Junior Criminal Lawyer to join our highly regarded and supportive criminal law team based in Melbourne.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a lawyer with 1–2 years post-admission experience to gain hands-on experience in criminal law within a dynamic and experienced team.
You will be responsible for managing and appearing in a wide range of criminal matters across all courts in Melbourne and occasionally in regional areas. We offer a collaborative and collegiate environment where you’ll receive genuine mentoring and support, alongside increasing autonomy based on your comfort and capability.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a caseload of summary matters
Regularly appear in the Magistrates’ Court and other jurisdictions
Draft legal documents, briefs, case summaries, and correspondence
Develop and implement tailored legal strategies for clients
Build trusted relationships through clear, responsive, and compassionate communication
Explain legal processes and outcomes to clients clearly and confidently
Maintain well-organised and compliant files in accordance with firm and professional standards
Work collaboratively with administrative and legal team members to ensure efficient service delivery
About You
You will be a motivated and ethical legal practitioner with a passion for criminal law and client advocacy. You bring:
1–2 years’ post-admission experience in Victoria
Strong written and verbal advocacy skills
Sound knowledge of criminal law processes and court procedures
Demonstrated courtroom experience
A high level of professionalism, integrity, and client care
A current Victorian Practising Certificate (or eligible to apply)
Australian citizenship or permanent residency with full work rights
