Accountant (with HR Experience)
1 x Full Time Role
Based in West Leederville

The Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health is a registered Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and ACNC charity dedicated to reducing Indigenous suicide, building resilience, and strengthening wellbeing in Indigenous communities across Australia. Founded by Dr Tracy Westerman AM, a multi-award winning psychologist and Nyamal woman from the Pilbara region, Jilya is a truly grassroots organisation making significant change in Australia.

We are seeking a values-driven Accountant with HR experience (or a strong desire to develop in this area) to support the financial and operational sustainability of our growing organisation. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful change while working in a culturally safe and inclusive environment. We’re looking for someone who is deeply aligned with Dr Tracy Westerman’s mission to improve mental health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

At The Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health, you’ll be part of a passionate team working toward healing and empowerment for future generations. We offer a supportive environment where cultural integrity, collaboration, and excellence are at the heart of everything we do.

About the Role

This dual-role combines core accounting responsibilities with HR support functions. You’ll play a vital part in budgeting, payroll, financial reporting, compliance, and supporting people-related processes.

You’ll work closely with program teams to ensure financial decisions support community outcomes and uphold The Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health cultural and clinical values.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.

Manage accounts payable, receivable, and payroll.

Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and grant acquittals.

Providing HR support through accurate record-keeping, payroll coordination, and initiatives that foster an inclusive, compliant, and well-supported workplace.

Ensure compliance with accounting standards, ATO, ACNC, and funding bodies.

Support audits and uphold financial governance frameworks.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CA/CPA qualified or working towards)

Experience in accounting and HR coordination or willingness to develop HR skills.

Knowledge of payroll systems and HR compliance.

Background in not-for-profit or Indigenous health/community services.

Familiarity with grant reporting and NFP governance.

Understanding of payroll systems and HR compliance (Fair Work, NES)

High level of accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-culturally.

Commitment to Jilya’s values and social justice.

Valid Australian driver’s licence, National Police Clearance, Working with Children Check, and Bankruptcy Financial Check.

Desirable:

Experience in Aboriginal or diverse organisations.

Understanding of Fair Work Act and relevant Awards.

The salary range offered is between $100,000-$120,000 per annum plus superannuation depending on skills and experience. As a not-for-profit, The Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health offers salary packaging, which can boost your take-home pay by reducing taxable income.
