- SNSW Grade 9/10 - base salary ranging from $130,507 to $157,430
- Location - Haymarket, Parramatta or Gosford (3 days in office required)

About the role
You will be responsible for delivering expert advice and services in the design of data products and data-related services to support the achievement of business outcomes and strategic goals.
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining scalable data solutions for both real-time and batch processing. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to develop a centralized data lake and real-time streaming solutions, ensuring efficient data ingestion, governance, and secure data sharing. Your expertise in cloud-based architectures, data pipelines, and event-driven solutions will drive innovation and enhance decision-making across the organization. This role combines hands-on technical skills, strategic thinking, and collaboration to deliver high-impact data solutions that align with business goals
Key responsibilities include
- Partner with stakeholders to design, build, test, and maintain complex data management systems aligned with business needs.
- Develop automated, reliable, and secure data solutions to provide valuable insights and improve operational efficiency.
- Design and develop scalable event-driven and streaming solutions that process real-time data effectively.
- Architect and implement scalable, centralized data repositories that support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data at any scale, empowering businesses to analyse historical and real-time data for trends, predictions, and actionable insights.
- Mentor and coach engineers to foster best practices in data engineering and software development.
- Provide expert guidance on data strategy, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and adherence to industry standards.
- Simplify complex data and technical concepts, making them accessible for non-technical audiences.
- Ensure compliance with security, governance, and data management best practices.
Your skills and experience
- Proven experience in designing and developing scalable data platforms in cloud environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a passion for transforming complex data into actionable business solutions.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring and coaching engineers to improve team effectiveness and technical capability.
- Demonstrated proactive leadership in driving high-quality, on-time project delivery while ensuring system reliability.
Your technical skills
- Expertise in event-driven architectures and real-time data streaming technologies (Kafka, Confluent, Flink, etc.)
- Proficiency in cloud-based data solutions (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and distributed data processing frameworks.
- Strong background in SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and ETL/ELT processes.
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of data security best practices and compliance frameworks.
- Proficiency with data lake platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery, with a strong understanding of data storage, management, and analytics at scale." (Desirable)

Support office roles will be headquartered across offices in Haymarket, Parramatta and Gosford. We will consider role headquarters outside of the above locations where the role can reasonably be performed from that location taking into consideration the operational, financial and customer requirements of the role, and an ability to attend a NSW Government workplace as required.
