Anchor your career with the AFP

The AFP is expanding in Western Australia to support important national protection priorities like the AUKUS initiative. There’s no better time to explore career opportunities in WA.

The AFP are undertaking their largest recruitment drive for Protective Service Officers (PSO) to support Submarine Rotational Force West, at HMAS Stirling, a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base situated just south of Perth.

As a PSO at HMAS Stirling, you’ll contribute your service to Australia’s defence capabilities and national security. You’ll have the opportunity to develop specialist skills and capabilities across a range of areas including:

▪ drone detection

▪ maritime

▪ rapid response

▪ bomb appraisal

▪ short barrel rifle

▪ public order management.

You’ll gain invaluable experiences working with domestic and international defence stakeholders alongside nuclear-powered submarines.

If you are motivated to escape the mundane and do something different, the AFP has a role for you. Our PSOs keep people and places safe from terrorism, violent protests and other events motivated by violence. This includes providing:

▪ highly visible uniformed security at Defence sites

▪ operational planning and delivery for special events and protests

▪ first-response capabilities, including enhanced counter-terrorism first response (CTFR)

▪ intelligence-led, risk-based targeted activities

▪ stakeholder engagement and partnership building.

As a PSO, there is no need to commit to years of study and a HECS debt. You will get paid to train over 15 weeks, including accommodation and meals. If you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded a Certificate IV in Protective Services.

Following graduation from the AFP College in Canberra or Pinkenba in Brisbane, PSOs are paid a starting salary of $78,960.86 per annum. This is inclusive of a base salary, 22% composite and Use of Force (UoF) allowance*, plus overtime and penalties. PSOs also receive 15.4% superannuation, including during all periods of maternity leave.

*The annual payment of the UoF allowance is dependent on members successfully holding and maintaining a UoF certification.
