Internal Accountant – ATO Compliance & Finance Operations
Location: Narre Warren / Hybrid
Type: Part Time & Full Time Applicants Considered
Salary: Competitive + super (commensurate with experience)
About us
We’re a growing Australian business looking for a hands-on, detail-driven Internal Accountant to take ownership of our end-to-end finance operations. If you love tidy ledgers, on-time lodgements, and clear reporting that helps leaders make decisions, you’ll feel right at home here.
The role
You’ll be the go-to person for ATO compliance and business compliance and will run the day-to-day finance engine: invoicing, AR/AP, payroll & super, BAS/IAS, reconciliations, monthly reporting, cashflow, cost control, and coordination with our external accountant.
What you’ll do
Compliance: Prepare & lodge BAS/IAS (GST, PAYG-W), manage STP Phase 2, superannuation (SuperStream), EOFY finalisation; maintain registers for FBT, payroll tax (if applicable) and TPAR.
Invoicing & AR: Issue accurate invoices, manage receivables and collections, reduce DSO, reconcile debtor ledgers.
AP & Outgoings: Run approvals, code GST correctly, schedule supplier payments, optimise DPO.
Payroll & Super: Process end-to-end payroll, STP submissions, clearings, new starters/terminations, leave and awards.
Reconciliation & Month-end: Complete bank/credit card/ATO/AR/AP/payroll clearing reconciliations; journals, accruals, prepayments, depreciation.
Reporting & Costs: Deliver monthly management packs (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, variances), track budgets/forecasts, drive cost initiatives.
Funds Management: Monitor cash position, produce short- and medium-term cashflow forecasts, manage banking/merchant facilities.
External Accountant: Own the relationship, prepare year-end workpapers and respond to technical queries.
Controls & Systems: Improve processes, strengthen controls and documentation (SOPs), and champion automation.
What you’ll bring
3–5+ years’ accounting/finance ops experience in Australian SMEs.
Proven BAS/IAS, GST, PAYG-W, STP, superannuation and EOFY experience.
Confident with month-end close, reconciliations, and management reporting.
Proficiency in Xero/MYOB/QuickBooks, STP-enabled payroll, and strong Excel skills.
High ownership, accuracy, and deadline discipline; clear communication with non-finance stakeholders.
Nice to have
Degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA/CA (completed or in progress).
Experience with project/job costing, WIP or inventory; ASIC/FBT record-keeping.
Process improvement/automation experience (OCR rules, integrations, add-ons).
Why you’ll love it here
Real ownership of the finance function and compliance calendar.
Leadership visibility and impact on decisions and growth.
Flexible work options (hybrid), supportive team, and genuine autonomy.
Competitive salary + super, and professional development support.
What success looks like (first 6 months)
100% on-time lodgements (BAS/IAS, STP, SG) with zero penalties.
Month-end closed by T+5 business days with complete reconciliations.
Clear, actionable monthly packs and reliable cashflow forecasts.
Strong AP/AR hygiene with improved DSO/DPO and tight cost control.
