About the role

This position is based in the Industrial Relations Branch within the Workforce Services Directorate which strives to continuously improve the Department’s industrial practices by:

Enabling management to respond to workplace issues in compliance with relevant workplace laws and industrial instruments.

Responding to industrial disputes, including matters before relevant courts and tribunals.

Managing the Department’s industrial instruments.

The primary roles of the Industrial Relations Advisor are to:

Provide advice to managers within the Department in relation to industrial matters.

Work collaboratively with other members of the Industrial Relations Team in relation to the negotiation of industrial agreements and resolution of industrial disputes.

Specific Role Responsibilities:

Providing expert advice and guidance to management, operational areas, and employees on a wide range of human resources and industrial relations matters. This includes the interpretation and application of industrial awards, enterprise agreements, workplace policies, and relevant employment legislation.

Negotiating and investigating complex and sensitive industrial relations matters, providing high-level analysis and strategic recommendations to inform resolution and support organisational objectives.

Representing and advocating on behalf of the Department in relevant tribunals, commissions and courts under supervision.

Developing collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as employee organisations, other employee representatives and public sector agencies including Government Sector Labour Relations of the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety.

Participating in negotiation, conciliation and mediation with employees, employee organisations and other employee representatives.

Initiating and coordinating workplace change processes and policies resulting from industrial relation decisions, orders, Government policy and legislation.

Other duties as required in accordance with strategic objectives, business plans, local workload priorities and performance management plans.

Applicants should possess extensive experience in delivering industrial relations advice, consultancy, and advocacy services, coupled with a thorough and practical understanding of public sector processes, governance frameworks, and accountabilities. They should be capable of navigating complex industrial relations matters while ensuring compliance with relevant policies and legislative requirements.
