Why your role matters
The Research Ethics & Compliance Support (RECS) team coordinates committees and processes for research involving humans, animals, gene technology, radiation safety and research export controls and provides advice on legislative and other requirements in these areas. Committees include the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and its Human Research Ethics Advisory Panels (HREAPs), the Animal Care & Ethics Committees (ACECs), the Gene Technology Research Committee (GTRC), and the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). RECS also coordinates other research compliance areas such as the use of Schedule 8 and 9 substances, drone use and biosecurity and leads the development of the policy environment for research ethics and compliance at the university.
Reporting to the Manager, Research Ethics & Compliance, manage operations of the Gene Technology Research and the Radiation Safety Committees; providing high-quality support including minute taking, ensuring compliance with the relevant legislation and applications for research projects are of a high standard. You’ll also work closely with the University’s Biosafety Coordinator and Radiation Safety Officer, to maintain research compliance and lead the accreditation and renewal processes for Approved Arrangements.

Who you are
You have a relevant tertiary qualification and or experience in an academic research environment, and can demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Process Improvement: Experience in managing and improving business processes and regulatory compliance in higher education/research sectors.
- Analytical Skills: High-level analytical and problem-solving skills for assessing research applications.
- Stakeholder Interaction: Ability to interact with stakeholders and provide expert advice on research compliance.
- Legislation Knowledge: High-level knowledge and interpretation skills of research compliance legislation.
- Secretariat Support: Ability to provide secretariat support to committees and manage staff in a paperless environment.
- Digital Skills: Skills in designing and maintaining websites and online training courses.
- Strategic Advice: Ability to provide strategic advice on legislation, policies, and procedures in research management.
- Commitment to UNSW Values: Understanding and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values.
- Health & Safety: Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.
