The Role:
The role is responsible for development and delivery of amendments to the Planning and Design Code, Strategic Planning and Precinct Planning in alignment with the Council's City Plan and in accordance with the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016. This includes coordinating consultants, managing complex issues, and providing expert advice on land-use planning responses to emerging challenges. The position plays a key role in influencing organisational thinking, shaping integrated policy, and developing strategies that guide sustainable growth and development across the City of Salisbury.
The position sits within a multi-disciplinary division which also includes Sustainability and Economic development. The position is based at the Polaris Centre, Mawson Lakes.
Key Responsibility
- Deliver amendments to the Planning and Design Code that are consistent with Council's City Plan and strategies and in accordance with the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
- Co-ordinate and supervise Consultants in the delivery of Code Amendments in accordance with the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
- Undertake strategic research, project and policy development in relation to land use planning and property development for the City.
- Inform decision making processes within Council by providing high quality, timely advice on urban policy matters.
- Develop practical, integrated planning policies and strategies that align with the City Plan and respond effectively to emerging urban challenges and opportunities.
- Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders, including government agencies, community groups, and consultants, to ensure planning initiatives are inclusive, well-informed and successfully delivered.
- Manage the full policy development cycle - from research and formulation through to implementation, review and evaluation - ensuring a robust, evidence-based approach to planning policy.
Skill & Competencies:
- A tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning or related field.
- An understanding of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016, the Planning and Design Code and the procedures for its amendment
- Ability to apply high level strategic and innovative thinking to complex and sensitive planning issues, including proven problem-solving ability and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise initiative, work autonomously and effectively contribute to a team.
- Strong and effective written, visual and verbal communication skills including report writing skills, presentations, interpersonal skills and proven commitment to the provision of excellent customer service.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, balance competing priorities and produce high quality work within specified timeframes.
