About Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd (KAMS) is the leading regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Established in 1986, KAMS aims to advocate for Aboriginal health and wellbeing while delivering centralised resources in collaboration with its member services.

Our vision is to empower Kimberley Aboriginal people to be strong, healthy, and connected through community-controlled services. KAMS provides a variety of programs and services, including renal services, remote health care, mental health support, and integrated support services, all focused on improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people in the region.

Position Overview

The Remote Early Childhood Supports (RECS) Occupational Therapist will be based in Kununurra (or fly in and out from Broome) and work collaboratively within the Early Childhood Support Allied Health Team, providing essential services to Aboriginal children aged up to 9 years who are experiencing developmental delays or disabilities. This role requires a culturally sensitive approach, ensuring that services align with the unique needs of Aboriginal families.

The Occupational Therapist will engage in assessments and interventions that support self-care, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and social skills, while also empowering parents and caregivers with practical strategies to facilitate development at home.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct evidence-based assessments and interventions within a multidisciplinary and family-centred framework.
  • Implement effective occupational therapy services to assist families accessing the RECS Program.
  • Advocate for and coordinate with community-based services to enhance support for Aboriginal families.
  • Develop and execute strategies to improve access to childhood development services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Support Family Support Workers in delivering the RECS Program and provide training on occupational therapy services.
Salary & Benefits

This position offers a competitive base salary of $127,769 per annum, along with additional benefits including;

  • $13,000 accommodation allowance p.a pro rata;
  • $3,569 district allowance (single), $7,138 (double) p.a pro rata;
  • $1,440 electricity allowance p.a pro rata;
  • plus superannuation and salary packaging!
Candidate Profile

We are seeking a qualified Occupational Therapist who is passionate about making a difference in Aboriginal communities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in children’s therapy, particularly in developmental delays and disabilities, and have experience working collaboratively with families.

  • Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy and current AHPRA registration.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.
  • Knowledge of family-centred and strengths-based early intervention approaches.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Willingness to travel regularly across the Kimberley region.

Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to culturally sensitive practises and possess the skills to develop functional goals for children in their natural environments.

If you are ready to take on this rewarding role and contribute to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and families in the Kimberley region, we encourage you to apply.
