The Darwin Aboriginal and Islander Women's Shelter (DAIWS) is a non-government organisation dedicated to the support of Aboriginal women and their children at risk of experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. DAIWS operates women's shelters for crisis accommodation, transitional housing units for longer term accommodation and support as well as outreach and counselling services for current and former clients.
Applicants must have a minimum of 1+ years experience working with Aboriginal communities.
A minimum of 1-2 years experience in domestic violence or family services is required.
Both police check and Working with Children clearances are mandatory requirements for this position.
MAIN ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Certificate IV qualification is required for this position.
This position is open to Australian citizens only.
DAIWS Outreach Services intend to reduce family violence, physical and psychological abuse, child neglect and trauma and inhibit the intergenerational cycle of violent behaviors resulting from family violence.
The intensive family case management work will be undertaken with vulnerable Indigenous families in Darwin, Palmerston and the six town communities [Bagot, Kulaluk, Minmarama, One Mile, Knuckey Lagoon and Palmerston Indigenous Village] who are dealing with family violence and have multiple and complex needs.
Intensive case management involves matching services to individual / family needs, and providing a mix of practical, educational, therapeutic and advocacy supports at a level of engagements over a sustained period.
Each Community Family Case Worker will carry a caseload. Caseworkers are expected to work with women, men, children and families in a safe and culturally appropriate environment.
Where it is safe to do so, caseworkers will also work with the person using violence (PUV) and look to connect them with services to help address their violence and behaviors. Caseworkers are expected to work in partnership with other organisations under the Family Safety Framework (FSF) and in line with the NT Government's Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Reduction Strategy.
The Caseworkers are expected to meet with individuals/families at least twice per week for the first month of their involvement in the program, then as needed for a minimum period of six months.
Assess referrals from SupportLink and determine early intervention, support and referral pathways for individual / families at high risk of harm or death. Complete domestic and family violence risk assessments using the Common Risk Assessment Tool (CRAT) and complete safety plans to maximise victim safety as well as provide increased pathways to other services including the FSF.
Review both CRATS and safety plans on a regular basis to ensure they are current.
Develop collaborative relationships and engage regularly with vulnerable Indigenous families in Darwin, Palmerston and the six town communities [Bagot, Kulaluk, Minmarama, One Mile, Knuckey Lagoon and Palmerston Indigenous Village] and other relevant service providers to improve responses to domestic and family violence and minimise the risk of further family violence.
Advocate and support women, men, children and families experiencing domestic and family violence with legal, medical, housing and Centrelink services. Complete external referrals for the whole family as required.
