About the role
We have an opportunity for a Principal Platform Engineer to be part of our Database and Mainframe Platform, Technology & Communication Services Command. The Principal Platform Engineer is responsible for leading service and technical design activities for the relevant technology platform. The role also provides technical support and advice on related technologies to users across multiple locations and platforms, ensuring changes to the environment including complex deployments are managed and have minimal risk to the NSWPF and its data.
We are seeking experienced Principal Platform Engineers (Database Administrators) to join our database support team. In this role, you will provide 24x7 support for NSWPF’s mission‑critical systems across multiple database technologies, ensuring the performance, availability, and security of databases platforms.
We are seeking:
- Adabas/Natural Database Administrators with extensive experience in day to day administration and support of Adabas on IBM Z Mainframe systems.
- SQL Server Database Administrator with extensive experience in day to day administration and support of SQL Server databases in hybrid environments.
Candidates with expertise in both Adabas and SQL Server will be highly regarded and strongly encouraged to apply.
Candidates with expertise in one of these database technologies and a strong commitment to learning and supporting the other, will also be viewed favourably
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
- Perform day to day support and administration of database systems, ensuring stability and reliability
- Participate in on-call roster to provide 24 hours/7 days per week support for database systems to maintain high availability and system resiliency
- Plan, schedule, and apply database patches, upgrades, and routine maintenance activities.
- Diagnose and resolve complex database issues promptly; escalate unresolved problems to vendors to minimise downtime.
- Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies to optimise system efficiency.
- Provide technical support for incident resolution and problem management
- Support and participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution
- Implement and maintain robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
- Maintain system documentation, standards, and procedures
- Drive continuous improvement through automation and adoption of best practices in database management.
- Mentor and support team members
To be successful in this role, you will have highly developed skills and experience in:
-Extensive experience in day-to-day management and administration of Adabas and/or SQL Server database technologies in large complex environments.
- Proven experience in supporting mission critical, high-availability systems including participation in a 24/7 on-call support roster to ensure continuous database availability.
- Experience and expertise in database performance tuning, monitoring, and optimisation.
- Demonstrated experience in planning, scheduling and applying database patches, upgrades and routine maintenance activities.
- Advanced skills and experience in diagnosing and resolving complex database issues including incident resolution and problem management
- Demonstrated experience in disaster recovery planning, testing and executions
- Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and maintaining robust backup and recovery procedures
- Demonstrated ability to manage database security, integrity, and compliance.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
