The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking an Industry Officer, to provide a critical role within Loddon Prison and Middleton.
About the Business Unit
Located at Castlemaine, Loddon Prison is a 477 bed Medium Security Prison for sentenced male prisoners. Adjacent to Loddon Prison is Middleton, a 236 bed Restricted Minimum Security Prison for sentenced male prisoners. The focus of both prisons is rehabilitation via individual case management, employment, education, training and also the provision of programs and targeted interventions to address offending behaviour and promote the development of prosocial behaviour. Both prisons provide contemporary and quality correctional services that prepare prisoners for transition and reintegration.
About the Role
Reporting to the Industry Supervisor, Industry Officers prepare prisoners for release and enhance post release employment opportunities through prisoner employment, integrated on the job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities. Industry Officers assist with the management of prisoner employment, establish and maintain safe operating procedures and other OHS legislative requirements and ensure compliance with prison industry procedures and the Industry Management Manual (IMM).
The Industry Officer is part of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for training and supervising prisoners in the prison commercial industries and service areas. Industry Officers Prison conduct searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information and preparing reports as required to inform management of emerging trends, incidents and for maintaining compliance requirements. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate prisoners. Industry Officers display highly developed communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills
Some of your duties will include:
- Establish and maintain safe systems of work and comply with prison processes, standards and requirements as well as legislation.
- Monitor and achieve targets in a complex trade or industrial environment and participate in processes of continuous improvement, LEAN methodologies, assist with Outside Job nominations and solution implementation, 200
- Provide support to associated areas as required, performing customer service operations, taking and handling money and co-ordinating prisoners working in that environment.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Computer Skills (Familiar with Department suite of software, Oracle, PIMS, JETS, Centurion Microsoft Office Suite).
- Relevant industry experience, together with appropriate qualifications or trade experience would be desirable, but not essential.
Qualifications
- Trade qualification and/or experience relevant to Loddon Prison and Middleton industries and services areas (preferred but not essential)
- Successful completion of Prison Officer Pre-Service Training.
- Current High-Risk License (Forklift) (preferred but not essential).
