The division administers national legislation and programs that drive energy efficiency, support innovation, and promote the use of appliances and equipment that are cleaner and more efficient.

The Opportunity

Two newly created APS5 positions are available on an initial 6-month labour hire contract, with the possibility of extension up to 12 months. These roles sit within a team, which manages applications for products regulated under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Act 2012. This is an opportunity to join a growing team at a time of significant demand and to contribute to work that has a direct impact on energy efficiency and emissions reduction across Australia.

You’ll receive structured training in the registration system and assessment processes, flexible working arrangements, and the chance to develop skills in regulatory assessment and stakeholder engagement within a supportive government environment.

The Role

As an APS5 Technical Assessment Officer, you will:

• Undertake detailed technical assessments of applications, renewals, and change requests for regulated products, ensuring they meet legislative and procedural requirements
• Identify risks and apply sound judgement to support transparent, consistent decision-making
• Prepare clear, accurate documentation to support assessment outcomes
• Contribute to improvements in registration systems, processes, and training materials
• Provide technical information to assist colleagues and respond to internal and external queries
• Work collaboratively across the section, branch, and wider division while managing your own workflow to meet agreed service standards

The Ideal Person

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

• Experience in processing applications or assessments, ideally in a regulatory, compliance, audit, or government context
• Confidence using IT systems and the ability to quickly learn new platforms
• High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and sound judgement
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and follow processes
• A willingness to learn, take on feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement

Qualifications in public administration, engineering, energy, or related fields are advantageous but not essential.

This role requires the candidate to be an Australian citizen, eligible to obtain a Baseline Clearance or hold an active Baseline Clearance.

Salary / Rate

• $55/hr - $65/hr + 12% Super
• Canberra or Brisbane (with flexible working arrangements including WFH options)
• Labour hire contract – 6 months with potential extension up to 12 months
• Baseline clearance required (or ability to obtain)
• Full-time preferred, part-time may be considered for the right candidate
