At Curtin we are committed to embedding the voices and perspectives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples at the forefront of our decision-making to create an environment in which everyone thrives.

In line with Curtin’s 2030 Strategic Plan, Curtin University is committed to optimising employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In an effort to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait representation in the University, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply for this role, pursuant to Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA).

About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Data Analyst (official title: Research Associate) to join the Justice Health Group. This is a two-year full-time (1.0 FTE) appointment, suitable for someone with strong technical skills in quantitative data management and analysis, and a commitment to improving the health of marginalised populations.

This role is ideally suited to someone who thrives in a collaborative research environment, can manage complex data management and analysis tasks with limited supervision, and is passionate about producing research that supports social justice and health equity.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Data Cleaning and Management
  • Undertaking cleaning and manipulation of large, linked administrative datasets.
  • Creating and maintaining detailed documentation, codebooks and data dictionaries.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Contributing to the design and planning of data analyses, in collaboration with project leads and team members.
  • Conducting appropriate statistical analyses for academic publications and other research outputs.
  • Generating clean, well-documented analytic output (e.g., tables, figures, models) for use in academic and policy contexts.
  • Assisting team members in the interpretation of statistical output and communicating findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Collaboration and Research Support
  • Working closely with research staff, students, and external collaborators across projects.
  • Supporting the implementation of research protocols related to data access, cleaning, security, and governance.
  • Maintaining high standards of data security, confidentiality, and ethical research practice.

Who we are looking for:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. public health, psychology, statistics, economics or quantitative criminology) with relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of relevant quantitative experience and/or education/training.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency in quantitative analysis, statistics and/or mathematical modelling.
  3. Demonstrated experience in using software tools for data interrogation, extraction, presentation, management and analysis of large datasets.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in at least one widely used statistical software package (e.g. SAS, Stata, R, or SPSS).
  5. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into written form, which can be understood by a variety of audiences.
  6. Proven ability to organise time and work activities according to priorities and to meet deadlines.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  8. Demonstrated interest in improving health outcomes for marginalised populations, such as people with experience of incarceration.
  9. Experience with time-to-event analysis methods (e.g. Cox regression).

Desirable

  1. Postgraduate training in a relevant discipline (e.g. public health, psychology, statistics, economics, or quantitative criminology).
  2. Working knowledge of the Australian criminal justice system.
  3. Prior experience working with large, linked administrative datasets, especially in the health, justice, or social service domains.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work with data across disciplines.
  5. Familiarity with complex statistical methods, including survival analysis, generalised linear models, and multilevel modelling.
  6. Experience working in a research environment, including contributing to academic publications, technical reports, or policy briefs.

If your qualifications or experience look different from what we've described above, but you feel your skills and potential are a match to the capabilities we need, please apply. We are looking for diversity in experience, thought and approach. This role is part of a progressive and supportive team.

Role Requirements:

  • As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.
  • Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
  • This role requires that the successful candidate undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.
  • The preferred candidate must be located in Australia.

Your New Team: The Justice Health Group

The Justice Health Group is a multidisciplinary and mixed-methods research team working to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people who come into contact with the criminal justice system, in Australia and internationally. A cornerstone of our work is the use of large-scale, cross-sectoral, linked administrative data to generate high-quality evidence, and use that evidence to advocate for meaningful change to policy, practice, and/or service design.

Our projects span youth and adult criminal justice settings, in both custodial and community contexts. We work collaboratively with government agencies, service providers, academics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, and people with lived experience of incarceration to ensure that our work is rigorous, ethical, and achieves real-world impact.

We work across all Australian jurisdictions, with teams based in Perth and Melbourne. We are increasingly contributing to international research and policy initiatives, including in collaboration with leading academic institutions (e.g., Yale, UBC, Oxford) and key multilateral organisations (e.g., WHO, UNICEF, ICRC).
