ABOUT THE POSITION
The Payroll & Taxation Officer is responsible for the accurate and timely administration of payroll and related taxation compliance across AEMG’s Australian and international operations. This role ensures adherence to statutory requirements including payroll tax, FBT, superannuation, and workers’ compensation obligations, while also contributing to taxation reporting and compliance activities within the broader finance function.
Reporting to the Finance Director and working closely with the finance team, the Payroll & Taxation Officer manages end-to-end payroll processing, supports the preparation of tax returns and lodgements, and provides first-line advice on payroll and employee-related taxation matters. The role is critical in maintaining compliance, improving processes, and ensuring employees and stakeholders receive accurate, reliable service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Payroll Administration & Compliance
Manage end-to-end payroll processing for AEMG staff, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and compliance with Fair Work, ATO and superannuation legislation.
Administer employee benefits, allowances and deductions, ensuring compliance with relevant awards and agreements.
Prepare and reconcile payroll journals, ensuring integration with finance systems.
Ensure compliance with superannuation obligations, Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, PAYG withholding, and employee-related taxes.
Act as first point of contact for payroll queries, ensuring a professional and responsive service to staff.
2. Taxation Compliance & Reporting
Prepare and lodge taxation obligations including PAYG, GST, FBT, payroll tax, and workers’ compensation returns across relevant jurisdictions.
Support annual tax filings and ensure accurate recordkeeping for audit purposes.
Monitor changes to taxation and payroll legislation, advising the Finance Director of impacts and recommending process adjustments.
Liaise with external advisors and regulators (ATO, State Revenue Offices, WorkCover authorities) to ensure smooth resolution of compliance matters.
3. Workers’ Compensation & Insurance Returns
Prepare and lodge workers’ compensation declarations and ensure premiums are calculated and submitted accurately.
Maintain accurate employee records and liaise with HR on workplace incidents or claims.
Support the Finance Director in reporting and responding to insurance audits or reviews.
4. Payroll & Tax Governance, Systems & Process Improvement
Maintain payroll systems and employee databases, ensuring integrity of records and secure handling of personal information.
Identify and implement process improvements that enhance payroll and taxation efficiency, accuracy and compliance.
Support future integration projects linking payroll, finance, and HR systems
5. Business Partnering & Support
Partner with HR and divisional managers to provide advice on payroll, FBT and taxation implications of employment contracts, benefits, and organisational structures.
Provide timely reporting and insights on payroll costs, taxation liabilities and employee-related compliance to assist decision-making.
Support staff induction and education initiatives on payroll and taxation processes.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree qualified in Accounting, Finance or a related field
CA/CPA or equivalent professional qualification is desirable
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a payroll & taxation role, preferably in a multinational or transnational context
In-depth knowledge of Australian tax law (income tax, GST, FBT, payroll tax) and familiarity/exposure to international tax frameworks
Experience with tax compliance systems, reporting software and financial ERP systems (e.g., Xero, MYOB, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex tax matters to non-specialist stakeholders
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and adapt to a dynamic operational environment
