The Role: Head Driller/Machine Operator

You do not need to have a background in soil testing or geotechnical/environmental investigation, but this would be a big plus. We are looking for someone who is mechanically minded and able to operate machinery effectively. You will need an HR truck license, however we can provide this training if required.

GBI runs the following equipment, which you will need to learn to operate and be responsible for using daily:

small auger drill rigs on 4WD utes

cone penetration testing (CPT) rigs (track and truck mounted)

DPSH rig (Grizzly)

dual tube percussive rig with hollow auger capability

Hanjin Diamond Drill Rig

Backhoe or excavator operation

You will become familiar with the operation of all of these machines, along with soil logging to Australian standards.

This is a chance for you to immerse yourself in a more challenging, engineering-related role. We are looking not only for someone to operate machinery and recover samples, but to think on their feet and to learn from us the reasons why we do what we do, to help get the best information we can to guide our recommendations to clients.

Essential experience:

Mechanical/repair experience

A minimum of 1-3 years of mechanical/repair experience is required for this position.

An ability to solve problems and carry out minor repairs to keep equipment functioning.

Experience with diamond core drilling

A minimum of 1-2 years of diamond core drilling experience is required.

Australian work rights are required for this position.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience, with the upper end of the band requiring specific, demonstrated experience in most or all of the equipment proposed.

You will generally be working in Perth and the southwest of WA. Away work is common every second or third week on average, typically no more than 2-5 days at a time, but occasionally up to 2 weeks. There is no expectation of a FIFO roster. You will be returning home on most days. Where overnight work is required, we typically pay extra hours as an incentive for away work.

Where this is seldomly required, weekend pay is increased by 50%.
